patch won't patch

Good advice. For people suffering with TS2009, moving to TRS2004 or TRS2006 is very likely to prove highly beneficial. The old versions are often available now as budget software at a very low cost. I won't bother to list their relative advantages and disadvantages here as that information is widely available in numerous threads which a search of this forum should find.

I moved from 2004 to 2006 and all the DLS issues and that marvellous patch with 2006 where you had to reinstall 206 then before opeing it install the patch and hope it worked. I kinda hoped 2009 would be past that. When the dam thing works it is very very good. It is a marvellous simulator.

But by God when they screw it up they dont mess about. :'(
I have 04 and 06 they are old hat i shouldnt have to go back to old hat stuff. Ive actually put 06 on the Ubuntu.
Ill sit back and watch for a bit now.
it is pushing me back to the HO/HOn30 layout in the office though. Guess thats not entirely a bad thing

Please get it right!!

done all the above
auto patch didnt work
manual downlaod
checked power settings, set display to never, set sleep to never, disabled screen saver
turned off AV
ran it in safe mode

faced west, pressed start on a blue moon, with a finger washed in holy water sampled by a virgin (do you know how hard that was :o)

still didnt work. gets 50% and the fail message appears

i can configure a Ubuntu box with a multi wireless network at home but apparently im a moron cause I cant make 2009 work.

I have one lousy windows laptop and its for 2009 and my Lord of the rings battle for middle earth game :D which is getting lots more use at the moment.

im not a patient man at the best of times
:o
these are not the best of times

and it seems a little of the brethren get a tad miffed if we dare suggest their silly system for patching is silly and apparently we are whinging and whining. its the 2006 patch all over again, wasnt that a example of fine patch work :'(

i think its a slap in the face for all the content creators who spend months designing stuff to let us use it for nicks and they cant even give us a stable platform to run it on. Thanks to all the NSWGR creators out there. Love your work. Just wish i could run it:(

I can entirely agree with you people that are suffering with 2009!! I've tried absolutely everything i know to install this SP2 patch to no avail!!!!! This obviously seems to be an inherant problem, i'm giving up on the 2009 version & buying the 2006 or go right back to 2004 (which i own right now). I'm no dim wit when it comes to computer systems, I build all my own computers etc & can do nearly anything i put my mind to, but this SP2 patch is just driving me MAD! I'm sorry for anyone whom has 2009 with this problem. It's just no right, i get to this point:-

C:\Program Files\Auran\TS2009\bin\xul.dll

Then it starts the next part of the patch to get this message:-

Failed to apply the patch: 38599_to_40040
Patching aborted.

Any useful ideas would be appreciated, i've tried everything i can think of!!

It is most regrettable that when it fails there's no statement of the cause, nor of where the installation log file can be found. (There is an installation log file, presumably?)

Euphod often said that assets were Auran's Achilles Heel. Since Achilles had two legs, service pack installations must be the other one.

Hi everyone,

Thought I would post here my results of running the SP2 Patch. Mine did not crash the first time, I just thought running it for 15 hours was a bit much :hehe: , so I stopped it. I knew it would take time but not that long. I was patching from 38599 to 40040 and did everything suggested, shut down all other programs, stopped AV, disconnected from Internet etc. Oh and yeah I used the manual patch and I had copied over my Local Folder to a safe place.

My second attempt though was in Safe Mode (F8 for me) and from a fresh install of 2009, build 37625. I used the manual patch for this build, 37625 to 40040. I made sure nothing was running in the back ground and I had nothing in my Local Folder. This time after 3 hours it worked  :Y: . Since then I have reinstalled my Local Folder and have been playing around with CM2 a bit to see if everything is OK. Some have said after SP2 they have problems with Downloading but I have not seen that. I have had a look in Surveyor on a layout that I know, in compatibility mode, and everything seems to work OK.

I am not sure why mine has worked OK on the second attempt, but maybe something in my process can help.

My computer is a bit old, 6 years now, and I have XP SP3 running.

Craig
:):):)

Hi Craig,

I did exactly the same on my second try except I used F5 on mine.
My computer is also 6 years old, and I also have XP SP3. All is now well.

Issuing a patch that can only be installed on a fresh install and then only in safe mode strikes me to be the work of programmers who do not know what the h*ll they are doing.

I was hesitant to install the patch. But I ran it this morning, installed in about a hour. Database took about 40 minutes to do its thing (about 30gb of content). All I did was disable av,network and turn off firewall. With all the horror stories,I found it was a pretty easy install.

Well!! I've now tried it on a fresh install nothing running etc, in safe mode for yet another failure! There is definately something VERY weird with this patch! What games in general do patching in safe mode? This is just getting hopeless & i'm going round in circles, so i give up & i'm going back to a time when the patches etc worked properly. God help all those whom get TS X if Ts2009 is this bad!!

this may seem obvious; but its sometimes the obvious that we miss.. are you sure your downloading the right patch for your build number? I don't know what the error message listed above means but something deep down inside me said to check the build numbers.

Well I have 38599 installed and the patch which I downloaded manually after giving up on auto patch is called "38599 to 40040", so it sounds right to me. (398Mb) But then, this is Trainz...:D

same for me, same thing happening. and maybe we should be asking then if the auto patch is downloading the right one:eek: Thats where most have started, got no where come her, manually downloaded and then it still hasnt worked

I still havent seen a valid answer to the question why do you have to do a fresh install and do it in safe mode. As suggsted previously it represents crap programming.

I dont have to safe mode patch other software

Hi jedimastermat. I finally relented and patched in safe mode. It worked in 3 hours, whereas it was taking seven hours to achieve a halfway point , then it would hang for another seven. I suspect that because only the bare essentials are running in safe mode, there is more computing power given over to the patching effort. Internet was off as was anti virus program. Good luck.

downloading the patch and install.

Hi all - I have now installed the patch in question after having a lot of trouble with it. The offered download went nowhere and then I found a link to download the patch and install from my own PC.

I was getting about 50% of the green bar before it gave up. I tried this several times with the same result. In the end I did something really radical!

I copied my local folder to another drive and formatted my trainz drive! I installed a fresh 2009 and ran that to if it worked okay. I downloaded the patch again for 37625 (installed build from CD) to 40040. It worked!!!

On installing the patch I watched what was going on. The whole thing took about an hour. The first 50% of the green bar is unpacking the patch. This is not copied into trainz but onto a spare bit of the hard drive and you notice that before the patch begins it checks for disk space (?)

So - you need to have enough room on your hard drive to begin with. 51 to 100% is installing and setting up in the various folders. This is where most of the problems are coming from. It would seem as though most people can get the patch to unpack but not install properly. WHY?

I do not have the answer to that but perhaps what I have said here on how it all works will at least give some room for thought. Is it Microsoft (as has been suggested) shutting things down. Is is because we all have different content from each other over time? (Is this why the fresh install on a clean drive worked?) - and then I copied the local folder back into trainz AFTER the patch?

The patch would seem to be trying to get access to a folder that has changed, moved, been corrupted or something but it would seem that it cannot find or deal with the folder it needs to be able to continue. One for Auran and their debugger I think....

Hope this helps guys, if only to shed a little bit of light....

Regards Doug

I have to say its a little disheartening after reading this thread about the amount of mullarky that has to be gone through just to patch a game. I got this for my young son who is train mad .... Needless to say he has been bugging me for the last 3 hours about wanting to play his new train game (6 year olds are VERY impatient).

As a long standing PC gamer I can honestly say this is one of the worst things I have come across (other than Blizzard and their constant mess ups). The patch can wait. Little man can test it out in its current build. :)

Edit : Patch worked fine so hopefully he enjoys this game as much as he thinks he will :D

MY PATCH INSTALLATION FAILED AND WIPED OUT MY GAME WHEN I OPEN IT ALL I GET IS THE BUILD NUMBER HOW DO I FIX THIS? CAN ANYBODY PLZ HELP ME IM ONLY 12 YRS OLD AND MY DAD EVEN TRIED UNINSTALLING AND REINSTALLING IT FOR ME AND HE GAVE UP AND TOLD ME TO THROW THE DISKS AWAY HE WAS MAD I BROKE IT. WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX IT? AURAN WAS NO HELP AT ALL INFACT YOUD GET BETTER SUPPORT FROM A BRICK WALL.

As you are twelve. I will give you a little bit of leeway.

1. Do NOT type in all caps. That is called shouting in forum chat.

2. You have to register your serial number before you can patch the Sim. That is why it failed to patch.
To register, go to the auran home page, then click serial number and fill out that page.

Until you register, we will continue to be the "brick wall."

BIG reason to register is to show us that you have a legal edition of the Sim and not a pirated/hack/crack/illegal version. We the Trainz community generally don't give the time of day to unregistered Sims.

Once we see it is legal, we will then be open to help you.

I agree with maruffijd - using capitals is a quick way of being ignored on a forum, and not having a registered serial number is a good way of not getting any help.

I am one of the best people to assist with patching issues, but like many users here, I will not help users who have not registered their serial number(s).
