I have a single-track line (the south segment of my modified Marias Pass Approach route - the segment that goes to Great Falls) to which I have added a pass track. I must have gotten the signaling right because I have never had two locos stop head-on, either on the main line or pass track. It all works really well.
In my system, it turns out that one of the trains sometimes stops on the main line, while the other passes it in the opposite direction on the pass track. At other times, one train stops on the pass track, while the other passes it on the main line. There are no triggers in my setup.
Ok, I know -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But I'm curious about real-world operations. Should the train that has to wait, wait on the pass track? If that's the way the big guys do it, then should I be placing triggers to divert the first train to get there to the pass track?
I have used the Trigger Multiple Signals Rule to control crossovers (ala Chuck Brite's great tutorial). Will that rule work for this or is there a rule that will control the turnouts when the triggers are tripped? I looked through the Rules document, but didn't find one like the latter.
Thanks for your suggestions.
