Out-of-date versus obsolete?

Really dumb question but after all these years, I'm still not clear on the difference between the terms 'out of date' and 'obsolete'. I apply these filters to my local asset collection and get 2 different lists.

Obsolete assets are old versions of an asset you DO have installed.
Out of date assets are old versions of an asset you DON'T have installed.

Out of date means the copy you have installed has a newer version available on the DLS.
Obsolete means you have a newer version installed on your PC.

Malc's one is closest on that front. Out of Date assets can be updated through Content Manager or the Content Updates feature, Obsolete assets already have a newer version installed on your machine - use View Asset Versions in Content Manager to check both.

Obsolete: You have the asset installed but you also have a new version of that asset installed.
Out-of-date: A newer version of this asset exists on the DLS and you do not have it. Note that you might not have the asset at all, in any version.

Minor correction to Shane's comment:
If you do NOT have the asset at all and it is flagged out-of-date, you can not download an update via the in-game content update feature. Probably obvious, but just in case it caused confusion.

To add to this:
The counter of the in-game updater will count the number of assets you have installed that are out-of-date and have the new version on the DLS.
A common mistake is made in CM by trying to do the same count. The result will be much higher if you forget to add the "location = local" filter as it also will count all out-of-date assets which you do not have installed. So if trying to download updates via CM (as I always do), be sure to have that filter in place.

To add some chaos or confusion:
An asset that is not flagged as out-of-date can still be out-of-date if the updated version is on a 3rd party website; the flag only shows up if the update is on the DLS.

Enjoy ;).

I wouldn't say the two definitions from Malc and I are completely contradictory, although I will admit mine is somewhat incomplete, as I forgot to mention what Malc said about installed assets which can be updated. Between all the replies here I think everything has now been covered though.
All assets with a newer version show as out of date, whether you have them installed or not. These become obsolete when you install the new, updated version.

Defining moments

~snip~ I must say it is very easy to get confused on this topic, at least it is for me..

Ah, it comes with age Deane. Welcome, once more, to the retirement decade.

Hopefully these definitions are only applicable to the software and not the creators.

:D
(Out of date, but hopefully not obsolete)

Obsolete items are the built in ones that cant be deleted. Updated ones will replace the old one in your installed tab in CMP so only the newest version will show up. Some assets will show it has an update but due to the build number of the update being higher than your build, you cant download it via CMP. If you right click on an item in CMP and select asset versions you can see all the versions you have installed or are on the DLS. CMP will also list the 3rd party assets that are installed but cant show if any update is available.
