Ordnance Survey, One-inch to the mile maps of England and Wales, New Popular Edition,

This is an excellent mapping site for those wanting to 'cut-out' sections of maps to paste onto Basemaps and make accurate routes.

http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/maps/

This site also has old OS maps in a slightly more user friendly scrollable format.

The best quality ones are under NLS Maps/Old Ordnance Survey.

Unfortunately I can't see any way of easily copying the images other than screendumping and stitching together clips in a paint package. I'll have to check with Roland on his Transdem forum but I can't see there's any Web Mapping feature associated with the site either.

You can download 6inch PDF maps from www.old-maps.co.uk they cost about £15 though :(. I converted a plan of DEWSNAP sidings from the 1964 ordnance survey maps from PDF to JPEG using www.zamzar.com (free service). I then used transDEM to georeference the JPEG. This has produced excellent, if pricey, results for me.

Sorry everyone, I only did half the post. What I meant to add was the link - http://maps.nls.uk/os/oneinch_new_popular_list.html and also mention the era - 1945/47, which was the period just before the 'Big Four' became British Railways. There are no motorways and such like and it was, of course, just after WWII when there was still evidence of airfields, army camps and destruction.

You wont get them onto a baseboard. Dem maps are used for that purpose if you know how to do it. This is a simply way to put the image onto a basemap which is an object asset found on the DLS. You place the image into the basemap and then onto the baseboard in the same way as any other asset. You can raise and lower it and lay your track and roads etc over it. Once done it can then be deleted.

Thanks, OK so I have the image saved as a bmp, do I now have to make it into a Trainz asset? What type of asset do I make it and how?

Regards,

Dave

It would be great if you could get these old 1 inch OS maps into TransDEM. That way they'd be directly 'painted' onto the baseboards. But how to do it?

You need to download the 1km basemap from the DLS. Open the folder and you will see an image file. Replace that image with yours making sure you use exactly the same type, size and name for your image. Once installed you find it in the object section.

Thanks Stagecoach,

I tried it and it is a bit of work and then some eh? Well another piece of good info anyway.

Dave

Actually, no - TransDEM does it much better and all automatically.

See my TransDEM forum post how to access some of the historic UK maps directly, using the built-in Map Tile client.
Thank you. This is what I had in mind!
