OpenGL now won't work

I used to be able to run TS2010 in either DirectX or OpenGL modes but for some reason only DirectX works now. I suspect this may have happened after an update of a Nvidia driver at some time in the past but I do not know exactly what driver update started this problem. From time to time Trainz decides on its own initiative to reset all my in-game options to its own defaults, so it could be that I have forgotten to re-set something there.
My graphics card is Nvidia GT240 with 1GB DDR5 memory using the newest driver 296.10 running in Windows XP SP3.

Are there any experts out there who know what is going on, or am I stuck with DirectX only.

Thanks Shane, that was going to be my action of last resort, to work back through the earlier drivers if there was not an easier solution. I always thought that OpenGL was backwards compatable but Nvidia seems to have broken this.

Not had a Microsoft driver update sneak in that's messed up the OpenGL?

I have a GT240, GTS450 and a GTX460.

OpenGL is abysmal with the 240, for me it has never worked with any driver in the last 18 months, not much better with the 450, usable with the 460, that is if you count getting half the FPS I get with DirectX and severe stuttering as usable, DX is pretty much perfect.

Visually with the cards available now there is no real noticeable difference between DirectX and OpenGl that most users would notice.

Regarding Nvidia drivers, if you check out the change log for virtually every driver issued in the last couple of years there are continual fixes for OpenGL, none of which seem to make any difference. Last time I bothered to check on the Nvidia Beta forums, probably around 6 months ago, there seem to always be problems.

Thanks Clam and Shane. Since I have found in the past that DirectX gives better frame rates than OpenGL, I generally use DirectX so I can still run Trainz so it is no hardship to just use this. The only time I use OpenGL is on certain routes where it gave less stuttering although the frame rate was only about 60% of DirectX. By the way the latest driver 296.10 is not supposed to be a beta.

Anyway, don't worry chaps since I will just use DirectX on the new driver.

I had an awful mess with this a few years ago. It drove me crazy trying to figure out what had happened! Now I check my MS Windows updates carefully before downloading them. I do manual downloads after they tell me there's something available rather than letting MS update things for me.

I'm running a Geforce GT520 1GB DDR3. My latest patch is 295.73. Mind you i am running windows7 64 bit. Having the same problem with OpenGL.

Perhaps a MS Udpate screwed things up ... IDK.

I think in my TRS2006, it previously ran on both OpenGL & DirectX ... now it runs on only DirectX

But then again, I really don't care ... Trainz is just a bunch of lines on a bumpy grid.

Just found this thread.

I had problems with OpenGL when i would go from surveyor to driver where it looked like multiple rainbows appearing everywhere. This didn't allow me to play the game at all.

Rainbow coloured items need to be treated the same as black texture items.

Scottish,
i would manualy uninstall all video card drivers via control panel ,add and remove ,then reboot computer, then go to program files make sure that it has remove Nvidia driver folder if not 1 right click on that folder and select delete reboot once more then install new NV drivers making sure it is the correct OS for your computer and reboot,,,, now if this fails repeat from the begining but before you install the new drivers take out your video card and boot the computer without it, then turn off and install video card then drivers, really you should not update drivers automaticly always manualy nor should you install drivers over other drivers uninstall the old ones first,
if this fails your on your own champ

No, i've seen the rainbow effects on assets but the problem i had was nothing like that where indivudual assets become all different colours. The problem i had when i was moving about freely i could barely see the route as it looked as though i was going through a rainbow effect thus not seeing the route itself let alone any indivudual asset.

Although i must admit recently i have had to change my graphics card so it may have sorted itself out so i might try it again in OpenGL.
