After about 25 years of being very involved in Flight sims, and being a private pilot, I finally decided to give a railroad sim a whirl. I read a lot of info on different forums, and there was a discussion on this forum about the 2 programs that I was considering. I decided that Trainz sounded the most suited to what I was looking for. I downloaded it, and started trying the demos and lo and behold, it was alot harder than I imagined it would be. In fact, it was more work than running a flight sim program, which really surprised me. I loved the AI, the smoothness of the program, the frame rates on my new middle of the road Dell desktop with it's I5 processor, a GTX 550 ti graphics card that run sometimes around 65 FPS.
Whenever I had a question about something, posting it on this forum, would get me an answer very quickly. I know have started to download Routes and a couple of them are really amazing. I was running one this morning , T12 Harbormaster with the new Steam engine I downloaded for it, and it took me about 20 minutes to get out of the yard, turned around on the turntable, and onto the main line. Not as easy as i thought it would be, much changing of switch positions, backing up, looking at the map, backing up again, moving more switch positions, etc..etc.... This morning I was up at 7, and here it is 12 noon, and all I have done is walk my dog, and been on Trainz...
I am amazed to see things like bridges that go up and down, derricks moving stuff in industrial yards, workers waving as I go buy, the trains response to grades both up and down, it just goes on and on. Anyway, I am glad I got this program, and I think with the free content that one can find, this will be something that will interest me for many, many years. Guess my next project, is to learn how to program AI traffic for some of the routes I downloaded.
