One week and learning with TS12 , and having fun

After about 25 years of being very involved in Flight sims, and being a private pilot, I finally decided to give a railroad sim a whirl. I read a lot of info on different forums, and there was a discussion on this forum about the 2 programs that I was considering. I decided that Trainz sounded the most suited to what I was looking for. I downloaded it, and started trying the demos and lo and behold, it was alot harder than I imagined it would be. In fact, it was more work than running a flight sim program, which really surprised me. I loved the AI, the smoothness of the program, the frame rates on my new middle of the road Dell desktop with it's I5 processor, a GTX 550 ti graphics card that run sometimes around 65 FPS.

Whenever I had a question about something, posting it on this forum, would get me an answer very quickly. I know have started to download Routes and a couple of them are really amazing. I was running one this morning , T12 Harbormaster with the new Steam engine I downloaded for it, and it took me about 20 minutes to get out of the yard, turned around on the turntable, and onto the main line. Not as easy as i thought it would be, much changing of switch positions, backing up, looking at the map, backing up again, moving more switch positions, etc..etc.... This morning I was up at 7, and here it is 12 noon, and all I have done is walk my dog, and been on Trainz...

I am amazed to see things like bridges that go up and down, derricks moving stuff in industrial yards, workers waving as I go buy, the trains response to grades both up and down, it just goes on and on. Anyway, I am glad I got this program, and I think with the free content that one can find, this will be something that will interest me for many, many years. Guess my next project, is to learn how to program AI traffic for some of the routes I downloaded.

Bob,

I'm glad you're having fun. Trainz TS12 is by far the best version so far. I've been at this hobby since TRS2004 came my way back in December 2004. At that point, the spiders moved into my old model railroad and I've been using Trainz ever since. You'll find the program to be very addicting. Hours will fly by without even noticing. What is so great about this great program is there is so much that can be done. There are so many aspects ranging from reskinning (painting) buildings and other assets to match something you like, to designing and building models in a 3d modelling program, or even writing scripts and programs to bring assets to life. Within the program, there's also the famous Surveyor, which I'm sure you'll discover soon. Once in there, it's easy to get lost for even more hours as you place objects, and build your own little world.

To add to the General and Yonah you will also find the Texas.

Welcome to Trainz, please do enjoy your addictive and sometimes frustrating stay!

Welcome to our world, your now on a downward spiral into the abyss of doom and gloom.
Days and nights will pass but you won't notice as your being absorbed into trainz.
Anyway, nice to have you here, enjoy your stay.

It's such a nice change to see a positive and enthusiastic comment such as this. Glad to hear you're enjoying your Trainz experience so far. At least you know where to come for advice unlike those who seem to think the first port of call is a forum rant without even having asked for help.

I hope you continue to find Trainz as rewarding as you have so far.
