I asked Lance about why the change (merely for curiousity's sake) and I got this...

...Well it actually had nothing to do with bidmod and the others as we didn't
even see their thread until after the update. The current smiles are what we
had in the old forum before the crash and we always planned to update them
for the new forum. So with the pressures of Trainz Classics now lessened, I
was able to find the time to make the update...

Guess that answers my question.
