Hi Gerry,

First I'm glad you have a backup of your base Trainz installation. Like any software upgrade, whether it's this game or even a big corporate database, having a good backup to start with is important. I'm going to ask some questions that may help you and the others help you if I'm not online.

Now, is this a manual update or the automatic update?

Did you run the patch as administrator?

Is your antivirus off while patching?

Did you clean up your hard drive first to ensure you have enough space? The patches are quite huge and then they decompress when they run the installation. This will add to stuff you already have on your drive and take away space. If you don't have a lot of space to begin with, this can really be a problem.

Install any hacks such as the SpeedTree script from Otto? If you did this, you need to restore the original files before installing the patches.

Did you spin in your chair with your eyes fixed on the spider on the ceiling?

Hmmm...

Do you still have your TRS2006 installed?

I ask this in case the patcher is pointing to the wrong version. This is common problem. If it is, you need to click on the "..." and choose the proper location where TS12 is located.

Is this a Steam version? The patch maybe different. I'm not sure on this.

I recommend running Disk Cleanup utility as that will not only free up space if needed, it will also clear out repeated install attempts. This utility is found under Accessories and System Tools in Windows XP and up, or by right-clicking and choosing properties on your hard drive. It's located under tools, I think there.

Glad to hear the spider moved. :)

Hmm, if you use manual patching try the following procedure.

- Disconnect from internet,
- Kill the windows, or any other firewall you use,
- Stop your anti virus program, or if that's not possible (AVG for instance) make sure resident scan (real time files in use scanning) is disabled.

Now apply the patch as administrator and then switch everything on again in reverse order.

Personally I ran trainz between every patching step but I don't think that's really needed.

Greetings from nighttime Amsterdam,

Jan

I have all other versions of trainz on another computer.
I have trainz 2012 on a dedicated tera bit HD with 822.63 free
Trainz12 DL from Auran N3 whatever.

Never mind..I'm leaving trainz for a year. I don't want to do this ****.
I can see days if not weeks trying to get this to work.
I have more creative interest that will be more productive .
Ill just eat 1st class ticket.

Thanks for the attempt .

Just run 2010 so much easier no hassles far more reliable, TS12 dosn't do that much more, your TS12 maps will convert back just change the build number. So much less hassles

Life's to short to play the endless fix-up hoop jumping games of TS12 and probably later versions.

Cheers

Afraid I can assure you the maps do not convert back from TS12 to 2010, they don't even convert from SP1 to pre SP1.

The most frustrated I have ever been with Trainz is with the updates to TS12 SP1. I too thought of tossing it in but I have too much of my time invested in creating content and learning about it to chuck it in. To get my updates working I basically followed Jan's suggestions. I think it was the firewall that caused most of the problems.

The easiest solution would be to buy a fully patched version for about $10 from Sim Central if the offer is still on or next time it comes around. I think it is good value despite paying for what I already had.

Or just use TS10 as was suggested. It's is a good version and I still have it installed.

Cheers

One solution is to keep your TS12 49922 version and then install a fresh version of TS12 and patch that. You can then carry on using your pre SP1 version while slowly adding new content to your post SP1. Patching a fresh install of TS12 only takes about an hour it is the downloading of the DLC content that takes the time but that can be turned off.
From the various posts I've seen in the past six months it seems as though people feel compelled to upgrade to SP1 without keeping a working copy of their pre SP1.

I would have thought if you have the digital copy, there is no need to buy another one, I would think the download will have been updated to SP1 HF3 as has been done in the past with other versions. Suggest checking before wasting money.

I have both and also have a version with no DLC so I can verify my creations will work without missing dependencies. That's been an issue in the past.

In my case the patching process was error prone and took most of the day. From memory it took me three attempts to get it right. So buying a fresh copy of TS12 patched through to SP1HF3 (58414) makes a lot of sense to me.

Just to add something to the discussion, you must have enough space on the drive where your TEMP folder is located for the install to work. This is where the decompressing of files is done.

Had sudden thought, you don't suppose the temp folder is getting full up with leftover bits of the patching and install processes which is maybe causing the subsequent repeated failures?

I've seen and had this happen before on other machines. There is not just the space issue being factor either. When a failed installer runs the second time, I've seen them pick up old bits from a previous install and failing again. After I cleaned up the old installs, along with gobs of junk, the install ran fine.

This is why I suggested running the disk cleanup utility.

That is a definite possibility, and in fact Auran does have this warning on the patch links page:

Please note - To avoid any complications while patching, we recommend doing the following:
Please clear out the Temp folder on your computer. When you are ready to install the patch, disconnect your internet connection and shut down all programs (including anti-virus and similar). Now run the patch. We recommend that you leave the patch to install overnight, and that you do not use the computer whilst the patch is being installed. You may also want to try installing the patch under Safe Mode in Windows.
