OH GREAT! Why does a simulator often crash - just before you're about to save it?

As the title says, why does a simulator seem to crash - just before you're about to save it? Oh here we go again!

Could be any number of reasons, overheating will cause the game to stop before it causes damage to the computer.
Take the side off (unplug it first) and have a good look for dust, especially around the fans and cooling vanes underneath.
