Odd Prototypes

Thought I'd post this. I ran across this while looking for a particular F unit (which I'll describe in a bit). Thought this is one of those "must haves" so here you go.

As to that F unit. The story is this: (I've only ever seen 1 picture of it and haven't found another.) Supposedly some years ago, one of the Mexican railways had a problem. Two units they had, one a conventional cab F unit, the other a GP9 (or 7, I forget which) were in an accident. Everything behind the cab on the F unit was scrap, and everything in front of it on the GP was as well. Rather than scrap the two units, the railroad cut off the cab of the GP unit (as well as every thing in front save the frame, and "grafted" the good portions of the F unit cab onto the frame. The locomotive looked something like a CF7 might, with the regular cab in place instead of the "spartan" cab style.

It would be sort of hard to do, because the F-units have a truss system inside supporting the body, while Geeps use the frame for support. Not saying impossible, just hard. And since you said you saw a picture, I believe you.

I happened to see it in a RMC magazine actually. I've been emailing some people and they too remember the article about it but no one can find it. I remember seeing the thing being titled "Prototype kitbash" but for the life of me I can't find the original picture. I'm still working on it though.

Edit:

from memory, I think the cab was cut off just behind the door, though I'm probably wrong. I have a few posts on sites about it, so if it turns up anything I'll let you know.

That reminds me of the FU-2. It was this model railroad locomotive that was kitbashed with an F unit cab, and a U-25B car body. I will search for a pic.
