Notepad

I saw a mention of notepad and some connection to Trainz. I want a simple notepad. I used ++ when I coded in C+ and that is too messy. Just a simple Notepad that I can save to a specific location.

Don't you get a normal (File Explorer) window where you can save it where-ever you want (when you hit "save.")

Notepad or Notepad ++ are great text editors and I prefer Notepad ++. Ages ago, I used to Crimson Editor and U-Edit. Both of these are similar to Notepad ++ but NP ++ is far more powerful.

Usually when you perform a Save. If you perform a Save-as, then the File Explorer window opens with the option to save somewhere else and you need to specify where you want to save your file.

I have noticed that the latest notepad for Windows uses tabs, and even if you save, unless you clear the tabs it can get confusing if you are editing several files with the same name, like config.txt. I am not sure I like the default behavior of holding on to the tabs, even if you close out Notepad and come back later. It is a bit like Notepad++ that way.

I fell for the multi-configs, though I do like dark mode.
I would prefer notepad ++ to be default.

You can do that in your Windows Settings. Goto APPS/Default Apps/ Choose defaults by File Type. Edit this to change from the default of Notepad to Notepad++.

Another advantage of Notepad++ over MS Notepad is that NP++ "understands" a range of programming and scripting languages. In my case its HTML awareness is invaluable for developing Wiki pages - it can spot my many typos in HTML tags, its macro facility has saved me a lot of time by avoiding repetitive typing and it has been an enormous help in debugging my table layout controls.

I have professionally used Notepad+ long ago. But, at an advanced age it is full of traps for me. I must have something simple as a "notepad" not a word processor. It is bad enough that I cannot remember all that is required for fluent Trainz activities and have to ask questions that might be annoying. Memorizing all of the options in Plus is impossible for me. Please do not nit pick with "you do not need to know all of them" . You hit the wrong key and you quickly travel to wonderful options where I simply can't remember their purpose. POWERFUL is a danger sign to me.

How about an 8.5x11 pad of paper? On computer I do have all kinds of text notes, pdfs, images etc for assist in sims but I also use all kinds of paper too. And an old fashioned pencil. I have legal pads, school pads, top spiral pads, side spiral pads, and 3x5 cards too! In fact, my 3x5 are cut in half and used for various things. On the flip side some things are notated in a spreadsheet with calcs being done. It just depends what it is...

My writing is more code than logic.
It is not a major issue. The logic in the Trainz run-time instructions usually offers sufficient info to give a picture of the route at a point in time. THANKS

Here is an option you may want to consider:
Windows comes with a free program called OneNote. It is a great place to store all kinds of free-form notes, including pictures and even videos. You can have multiple notebooks and unlimited pages in each notebook. Its only drawback is the non-office version (ie. the free Windows version) is a database stored in an obscure place (C:\Users\Yourname\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Office.OneNote_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\AppData\Local\OneNote), so a bit tricky to back up.

I tried EverNote and found that after some time it wanted me to pay for it, so I came back to One Note.

Here is a screenshot of my One Note. On the Left, I have only one notebook, but have four "tabs" in the notebook. You can have unlimited tabs. Trainz is selected. In the middle shows the pages in my Trainz Tab. It has almost 200 pages on all kinds of topics from
"Add a product queue to a railcar", to "YVRR Route Notes". I keep them in alphabetical order and can add a new page by right-clicking on any existing page and selecting "New Page Below"

It has become invaluable to me.

I used to use One-Note when I was taking night classes online. It proved to be invaluable for that because I could keep my notes for the projects we were working on. The problem was the obscure backup location as you said. During a system issue that required reformatting and a fresh install, I forgot about that and lost everything. If the files were kept in the Documents folder, the information would've been safe because I keep my documents folder on a separate drive that also has my desktop, music, pictures, and videos folders as well.

Metapad "fills the bill". A nice set of simple options. It does not require getting into Windows for normally used values and locations. It looks like most mistakes are easily recoverable.

I created a description of the beginning steps in my current route's freight train from/to a portal. I am sure I could lose the Trainz files and easily recode it from the description.
THANKS
