This is the kind of malware usually found on warez websites, you need to screen your advertisers more carefully. :n:

I think it is a advertisement for un-needed stuff, scans ... etc ... you don't even need ... in other words spam-ware/scan-ware... never ever, EVER, click on an advertisement ... even if it is to drive Tanks ... ignore all advertisements ... unless you really want malware to be installed on your PC.

Yup, most likely just an advertisement for something that you do not need/want.

Oh, and what's the point of those idiotic banner ads that I see sometimes on the Internet that simply contain "Download" and "Play Now" buttons?

Regards,

Retro.

They are there as advertisers, who pay for the advertisement on the servers ... so that hapless suckers will click on their spamware advertisement ... to insure that you recieve all the malware that you ask for ... by you clicking on it.

Never EVER Take surveys, and never answer: which way is she turning ? , how many balls are bouncing ? IQ Tests, Brain Teasers, You Lucky Winner have won a million billion trillion $ ... etc ... Never click on anything !!!

Pretty sad that there are still people out there who believe all that drivel; win, free, last chance, only .. etc. :o Never underestimate the gullibility of everyday people. Just when you think no one could do something so dumb, someone else will do something even dumber.

Things like this, if for no other reason, why everyone should use AdBlockPlus with a good ad filter along with/or a short, Google/Doubleclick-blocking HOSTS file.

So you hang out on "warez" websites often enough to be able to make the statement of what is "usually found" on those kind of sites?

I have a feeling that this is something that may be at least partly out of N3V's control.

Most advertisements are served by companies like MediaPlex or Google, or even companies like DoubleClick (owned/operated by Google)

These are the companies who need to screen the advertisers, as what they serve to other websites like this one is controlled by their systems, not the system of the website that is actually displaying the advert.

Most web browsers have the ability of hiding/blocking advertisements anyway.

Always someone in the world that will fall for it...

"Computer expert put an advertisement on the Internet offering a free computer virus for everyone willing to have one.

Didier Stevens from Helsinki ran his advertising campaign on Google Adwords for half of the year. As a result of his campaign 409 people clicked on the ad, that said: "Is your PC virus-free? Get it infected here!"

Besides, it is important for an antivirus to be easy to use, so even children would know how to scan for computer viruses, delete and block them.

There are several suggestion on people's willingness to download malicious virus, said Mikko Hypponen, who conducted the research at data security firm F-Secure. First of all, people must have mistakenly pushed the button, second - curiosity sometimes overcomes natural prudence and thirdly, some people must have been stupid.

In fact, Stevens tried the experiment with no actual virus. He wanted to demonstrate the advertising system can be a good source for everyone including those who have a malicious objective."

:hehe: :hehe:

But yeah I agree that these types of adds really should be kept off the forums if possible...

Correct, the ads on the forums here are provided by doubleclick (ie, google), as can easily be seen by the remains left by privoxy for me:

Code:
Request blocked by Privoxy: Blocked image request.
See why this block applies or go
to [URL]http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-5347650819923301&output=html&h=60&slotname=XXXXXXXX&w=468&lmt=XXXXXXXX&flash=11.0.1&url=http[/URL] ...

So if you (sniper more than you shane) have any venom to direct, it should be at google (who own&operate doubleclick).

N3V *could* technically manage the preferences for their ads, and block specific advertisers, but that is a near impossible task given the number of advertisers out there, and the fact that these scumware advertisers change name/account as fast as google finds and bans them.

(Btw, in case anyone wonders why I 'XXXXX'ed out two ID values in that url, it's because it was actually enough to identify where I live, thanks to google's dodgy tracking and 'ad targetting'. Which IMO is even more uncool than iffy scumware)

If I remember rightly, Google/Doubleclick do have a proceedure for ad feedback, although it will probably require some hunting down.

Google owns Doubleclick.

the way targeted ads work is you usually get certain adverts based on what you browse or search on the web. for instance, mine shows something about networking solutions right now. if i visit ebay and search for train stuff either for hobby or for reference for my trainz models ill usually get ads related to model trains etc. this is why i think its funny when people are upset by the ads they see on sites. nothing against you sniper im sure it just has to do with something you searched for or visited recently like finding drivers or something similar. i am sure that you dont want the program in the ad, but you cant really control who pays for ad time.

one time, we had a user complain to us about some gay pride banner on the jr site, saying he didnt support such things and was surprised that we did... well pal, its a targeted ad, nothing we can control, and if you dont support it, dont go to websites or search online about it.

Not the point, if google hosts doubleclick and doubleclick isn't fussy about selling ads to schemers and scammers, then don't allow google advertising on your website until they clean up their act. What and where you browse isn't the factor either, I get ads in my email window for match.com and classmates.com - I'm 58 years old and not remotely interested in dating college girls or looking up any of the Prosser Vocational class of 71, most of them bozos are dead or in the joint anyway. I understand the need for advertising, my ISP service would cost 4 times as much if AT&T didn't sell advertising, but at least they don't allow THAT kind of garbage.

:hehe:
Since turning on 'tracking protection' in IE9 I haven't seen the banner ad at the top of the forums. I can't say I've missed it.

(I've also turned off signatures in my forum profile, and I'm not missing them either...)
