no red coupler to decoupler rail cars

hello to all:

I thought I was going to switch some cars around but for me to decouple them I do not see the red decoupler icon between the cars. did I miss something here?

The red couplers appear when you click on the coupler icon to couple/decouple. All couplers on other consists in the vicinity will turn light gray.

Had something like that happen during a Kickstarter County session with a bunch of non-built-in cars. Saved and resumed the session and all was well.
