Newbie with Trains Question about Raildriver

I am a long time flight simmer and just got into train sims a few weeks ago. I bought World of Subways 1 and 3, and yesterday decided to get Trainz. My questions is, is the Raildriver really useful for running Trainz, especially for someone just starting out, or is it designed more for the expert level player? The two subway sims I have are pretty easy to operate with the keyboard, so I am wondering if the $200 price tag is worth it just for one sim, since I would probably have to reconfigure it every time I switch from Trainz to one of the subway sims.

I looked at the RailDriver, but really don't see it being worth $100 let alone $200, IMO. I'd probably be more interested in a conventional diesel control stand (ironically, since I favor electric locos! Go figure.) Some folks like the RD though.

"Useful". Depends, if you drive in DCC mode, no. If you usually drive in CAB mode, yes. Don't even have to look at the controls, I can find everything by feel and tell the throttle / brake settings by feel. All around it just feels more realistic than a keyboard or mouse. I don't have subway sims, but I do have MSTS and Railworks/Railsim.

MSTS - needs a "loader" program, and you have to exit MSTS and restart the loader program when changing from steam to diesel to electric loco types.

Railworks/Rail Simulator - also uses a loader program, which was often tempermental last time I tried it and the single lever control for the DB294 doesn't work.

Trainz - seamless interface, TRS2009, TS2010, and TS12 all use the same interface program, which loads automatically when you start any of those three versions of Trainz. Install, calibrate, forget about it, works without requiring any management at all. One problem, most steam loco specs don't work correctly with Raildriver, which is why I use the C-41 specs for all my steamers.

"don't see it being worth $100 let alone $200" - can't see that in pictures, what you have to do is get ahold of one and heft it, whack it with a ball peen hammer a few times to see how solid it is. This is not a cheap plastic toy which will break when the wind blows it off the desktop, it weighs about 5 pounds and is nearly indestructable. I bought mine back in March 2003, survived attacks from 19 grandkids and a rambunctious dog over the last 9 years, still works as good as the day I bought it.

As for the console style, I don't like modern newfangled engines either, so I customized mine with a saw and a couple of file handles.

I got mine back in 2004 use it everyday. If it should break i'll buy a new one tomorrow. Have had no problems with it at all. Will worth the money, and years of fun using it.

Tried the Auran C-41 loco spec before with a pencil42 Mogul and couldn't get that to work.

I downloaded the PO&N C-41 and added that loco spec to the mogul config. I believe it is the same enginspec. Now it works.

Gimmee a break, I have no hair. Pulled it all out fussing to get Raildriver and Trainz steam to work:'(. Yeah I used the C-41 cab in both cases.

ARRRRRRRRRRgh. I HATE computers.

If you go Raildriver you will never want to use the keyboard again. Makes the game fun.

Thanks for all your efforts

I especially like the built in subwoofer. Makes my fingers go numb every time(JK). The vibrating of the controller is great added realism.

Got the Raildriver this afternoon. Took about 15 minutes to put the stickers on it, and set it up. Works great. It is really solid, looks like it should last for years.
