Newbie Thread

novastorm2000 I accept your comments, apology and your fortitude to respond so please let's both leave it at that. I will also modify my post to reflect your modifications and response. As I said in my first post, I liked, and agreed with many of the things you raised. Because I've already been through what you're currently going through, the Trainz Resourses Directory was born. Unlike the Trainz Wiki, only one person has control of the Directory at this stage and that person is me.

The Wiki depends on Community members making an effort to submit or maintain material. If they can't be bothered, nothing happens unless John259 and maybe a couple of others do something about it. The TRD on the other hand is almost entirely my own work. I constantly scan the forums and the Internet looking for new material. More than 30 new listings were posted last month alone. It takes me on average, around 4 hours a day, seven days a week to keep it the way it is. A lot of Wiki stuff is listed on it but not all. In all about 8 people from these forums have contributed about 20 listings. I found the remaining 900 plus the hard way

For anyone to start a new resource guide especially with the TRD, Wiki and Trainz Magazine firmly established, it's just not feasible or logical to do it all over again. The Wiki and Directory are more solutions, rather than answering specific questions, but I and John Whelan constantly scan the Forums and direct people to our separate pet projects. As one or both of the John's have already pointed out, you could help contribute to the Wiki simply by signing up. Any person could also volunteer their services to assist me with the Directory if they were stupid enough to give up their time. One way of doing that would be to let me know if you find an unlisted site, be it a Trainz Community web page or a site that hosts plans and drawings. A few people do this, but nowhere enough. Most just post a link on the forums and seem quite contented when the thread dies. Nothing you or I can do will ever change that. I can assure you, there is no magic wand.

The TRD also lists over 150 Community web sites that contain a wealth of material, tutorials and projects you may be interested in. The only way you will ever find out is by ploughing through the listings and visiting every site. I'd be doing that before I considered creating any site, regardless of the proposed content.

Many thanks for the kind comment John but I should point out that didn't start the Trainz wikibook, nor do I in any way regard it as even remotely being my property or something that I'm in charge of. John Whelan wrote a fair bit of it I think but many others have contributed. I've done a few pages and a bit of editing, that's all. It is a wiki, which means it's public property and everyone who wishes to is encouraged to contribute to it and edit it, respect it, and benefit from it.

Its quite an awesome site and a huge commitment on your part! Having done some stuff like this in my past life I understand how under appreciated this kind of work can go! Let me say thanks again for providing this resource to us!

I do see your point here on this, its a shame you can't get more support!

This is only something someone privately operating such a site can do as often a site sponsored by the actual comapny has plotical and legal considerations that restrict what they are able to do and another reason why your resource you have created is so valuable.

Don't delete it. I've just modified my reply as promised and written a lengthy response which also covers some of the things you raised while I was typing it.

Addons and overall expansion

Purchase wise from Auran, what all can be added if you started with 2009 & 2010?

I see that the 3 recent expansion packs all work, Carlisle & Settle, Carbon City and Murch 2. Is there value in getting anything else and would a person have to reinstall?

For example, is Trains Classic obsoleted by the 3 above?

I think if a vet could give an overall view of a Auran purchase addon expansion strategy for those interested in having a great collection of routes that are 2009/2010 worthy that would be great!

Thanks in advance!

This is one area that Auran should address because there are so many versions of Trainz, so many service packs and so many expansion packs, Auran should have a web page devoted to this very subject. They've never done in the past, so I guess they don't consider it important.

Some of the packs you speak of are either stand alone or can be incorporated into Trainz. Due to compatibility problems between versions, it would be too easy to purchase the wrong thing, A chart showing what can be used with what makes sense, but even the vets may not like to accept responsibility.

Charlie Lear wrote this interesting Brief History of Trainz, but it hasn't been updated since 2006. I have always had it in my mind to contact Charlie, but I always find myself doing something else at the time.

I think your question is so significant, I suggest you start another thread on this subject alone using Charlie's web page as a starting point. I can help you with it if you want me to, and when it's completed, you or I could design a decent flow chart a bit like a family tree and publish it. You'll be amazed to see how many versions of Trainz their are.

Incidentally, any of my tutorials, or pages like this on the TRD are available to others on request. That is, Trainz Magazine uses stuff for the magazine, foreign site owners can translate and place it on their sites or it can go to the Wiki either as link (preferred) or republished provided a link is made back to the TRD. I do not have time to get involved with the Wiki.

Yep, the Trainz Tower Of Babel certainly needs documenting more fully. I've tried to maintain a list of version and build numbers. If anybody know that information for TS2010 I'll add it.

I'm also very mystified why the layout add-on packs (data files) change the build number (program files) and how they might interfere with the service pack upgrades.

Well that's pretty helpful info John, If we can combine that with carton graphics and available add-ons, we'll be getting close to solving the Da-Vinci code!

If you've forgotten the access keys, remember the tower rotation.... :)

Now come on John, how can anyone who hasn't even seen or read the Da-Vinci Code remember which way the B****y tower rotates?

.......but I did like the bits that I saw on TV!

What Tower?

Thanks

I have only now had a chance to briefly read the replies on this and will work through it if I find some time tomorrow or next week.

Right now I decided to wipe out 32 bit Win 7 on the Mac Book and go with 64bit. Wanting that Humpty Dumpty back together again as a priority!

Meanwhile I have tried to assemble some of the stuff on the Whale, looks like treez will not work in 2010.. but I might be able to get it to work if I take it through 2009 first, then upgrade 2009 to 2010 and then add on the other packs which seem to work.

I will start the new thread to see if we can get this right and I can publish the flow on my website and let folks link to it when it is all done, that way I can try to keep it up to date.

novastorm2000, I sent you a PM yesterday. Any chance you can answer it between jobs?

Another John to the rescue. :)

I try to help when I can.

Remember there's a lot more to the program than meets the eye originally. One of my professors said it very nicely a few days ago. Always ask questions no matter how stupid you may think they are. By asking a question you are not only helping yourself, but many others who had the same question, but didn't ask.

Hotkeys?

Thank you for the newbie thread.. most appreciated... I have flight sim FSX, show me a plane and I'll fly it... but trains.. new to me!

Ok, so first question.... where the hell is there anywhere online to show me what keyboard keys do what? It flashes up when I load the simulator for about 3 seconds....

There must be a basic description somewhere surely?

Helpppp....

Hi Marincky,

Always quote your Trainz version when asking a question. it makes it so much easier to answer.

For TS 2009 it's on Page 8 of the manual that came with the disk or in the Manual link on the opening screen.

More detailed hotkeys are mentioned in the 2006/2009 manual on your hard disk under: C://TRS200*/extras/documentation. The path may vary on tour setup.

Refer to pages 35-38 but do a search for all hot keys

In the old days they supplied a Hotkey chart. I'll do a scan and let you know when it's done, but I don't know if all the keys still work on later versions.
