I had MSTS but always thought Trianz looked much better and had better content available for it. now i have windows vista and seen Trainz world builder 2009 was vista compatable, so i bought it(i was so happy! ) i have version 3

Now though, i am having a hard time just playing the game, forget adding content, or anything, i am having problems just playing it.

one thing, i cant get a switch to move to save my life in Driver mode, i tried clicking on it and it just wont switch, is there a hot key for this? and how the heck do i couple and uncouple from cars?

i really want to be able to play this, i'm a huge UP fan and would love to operate the UP engines. i hate to say it, the user manual is really useless it really doesnt explain much anything that would help newbies to Trainz.

Can ANYONE PLEASE help me out?

Thank you,
lginc

edit: also should mention i downloaded the patch, but after installing it i ended up having to uninstall the game and reinstall it without the patch, a window came up saying the patch wasnt needed. again, i have version 3.

In other posts I have seen that you have to be in Administrator mode to use Trainz.

As far as the switch movement, are you far enough back away from the switch?? Also, I have found going to the map (Press M on the keyboard) and zooming in to the location. Use the arrow keys to get to the switch and click it there in the map.

i really want to be able to play this, i'm a huge UP fan and would love to operate the UP engines. i hate to say it, the user manual is really useless it really doesnt explain much anything that would help newbies to Trainz. There are a lot of UP fans on here.

What version of Trainz does it show in the screen?? Open trainz, click start and look in the bottom right hand corner. It'll tell you the version you have. Let us know that, then someone can assist you.

For the junctions there is the J key. Perhaps you tried to switch the junction by clicking on it while you were in the cabin and maybe you did not clicked correctly, or like Rusty1955 said above you were to close to the junction. Use the J hotkey , it will change the closest junction.

Regarding the coupling and uncoupling, to couple you just need to get the loco and the cars very close, like in real life. When they touch they will be coupled. In order to uncouple just put the mouse over the couplers and a red coupler will appear (do not stand very close to the train take some distance), click on it and it will turn into one green and one red. Then it means that the 2 wagons or whatever are uncoupled. For this you need to change the cab view. Use the 1,2,3 and 4 hot keys to change your game camera. ( you said you are a newbie so i felt it necessary to explain this also :) )
Hope i explained correctly and that you understood :)
Good luck.

Rusty1955 and okhiu, THANKS SO MUCH! , for the responces and help!:D

i was finally able to do a "run" thanks to your help, and it was AWESOME!

Rusty, as i mentioned before, to answer your question, i have TS2009 Trainz Version 3 (build 38411) World builder edition.

Again, i cant say Thanks enough for the help! Honestly i have been a model RRer for many years, and i railfan the UP, i live by UP's North Chicago service center. i currently live in a small apartment with my son, so my layout is down because of lack of space:'( , so Trainz seemed like a good alternative to me.

As i mentioned before, i had MSTS a few years back, it was fun but when i went to train shows i always stopped by the Trainz booth, it always seemed Trainz was much better:D , now that i have it though it seems 100x harder to figure out then MSTS was, i guess it will take some getting used to.

i would really like to d/l as much UP stuff for this as i can but i am unsure as to just how much out there IS compatable with Trainz 2009, and really at this time i am so lost as to how things work with it i think i should just try and get used to it first.

seems like the "runs" in driver mode are very short so i better get used to this quick.

If there is ANY easy help or advise to Trainz 2009 i would surely appreciate it.

Thank you,
- Lginc

:Dhi Iginc, welcome to Trainz, try this site Trainz Resources Directory - Everything for the Trainz Modeller. For a lot of great links to tutorials and a plethora of trains information. Also the Wikipedia has helpful information about Trainz.

You can always check other Trainz fan sites or the DLS where you will find lots of new routes, longer than the built-in ones.

WOW!, THANKS for all the responces, help, and links folks!:D

JRT, i joined the Trainz mag membership:) .

**UPDATE: Thanks to you folks help, i have been playing around in surveyor with much success!, made up some nice trains and expanded some routes.:D

On the down side, i havent found much UP stuff compatable with Trianz 2009:( , i downloaded a couple engines and a route/session, but sadly i cant get ANY of them to work, seems there's discrepancies with them, things that are missing so they wont work.

Hopefully somebody will come up with some reliable UP stuff thats compatable with TS 2009 soon.

Thanks again!

There is some 2009 content on the DLS, and creators are working on other items, I'm sure. I've been told in another thread that "within a year" there will be content and routes for 2009.

If you don't care to wait, you either need to become proficient at fixing content to 2009's standards, or alternatively you can buy another version of Trainz 2004 or 2006. 2009 has a lot of nifty features, but was released after the golden age of Trainz content creation, and it's error checking does not get along well with most content on the DLS, or anywhere else for that matter.

:) :) Hi lginc:

If the Engine does not run, you might want to look in the Config file and change the Engine Spec. if you need help please Holler. And by the way Welcome to the forum.
