Newbie needs help making a river

Slave to my route
Bumping around surveyor in T2010EE I'm slowly getting the hang on of it. I've download a map from the DS that has the TIGER lines on it.

Now I've had some early success starting the river. The problem comes in as the the ground rises I run out of water. If I raise the water high enough to cover the full length of the map there will be a flood downstream :o. I was thinking of doing a number of water falls but ran in to problems. When I tried to start a "new" river at a different I couldn't add water at the new elevation.

What advice can you give this newbie? Also how do you make a waterfall?

The more I use this sim and surveyor the more I love it!
 
Adding water to a descending (aren't they all?) river is tricky. You have to get creative. What I do is work with a given level for a bit and then shift down one complete blank "square" of water (making sure that there are no remaining connections to the previous level) and start again with a lower level. The reason is, as you found out, any connecting water levels will ALL rise or fall with adjustment. You need to make sure that there is a complete disconnect between levels.

You can use dams, weirs, waterfalls, and the like to disguise the change in water level.

EDIT: Missed your last question. To make a waterfall, you adjust the terrain level so that it just touches the upper water and the lower water and use textures to simulate rushing water. There are several 3rd party free/demo waterfalls out there also that fit between water levels.

Ditto what Bill says.

There are some nice textures too for rapids and rocks, and there are some discrete rock objects as well. Look for Feld on the DLS for these objects.

I also should add that the very best way to make sure you don't have two levels of water touching is to go completely vertical and "look down", then hit the F9 key to go into wireframe view. Water will still show up as 'water' so you can see if any is connected to your next level of water.

You can add water at the new level in this mode easily and make it 'rise or fall' normally. When it covers the grid lines, you know it's higher than the surrounding terrain.

When you're done laying water, you can go back to normal view and complete your terrain texturing.

I do know that one user had made a delicious set of animated rivers and waterfalls for TRS2004 a while back. I do not remember who created them, etc. All I remember, from what I remember :p, is that they are listed in Surveyor under the region "Jungfrau" (or something like that :p). :confused: :eek: ;) It is a very nice set, and when used correctly can make some very nice and realistic moving bodies of water, but it can be taxing on your performance on lower-end computers (like my laptop here :'( :o ;)). ;)

Rivers running downhill

TS 2010 has numerous river splines of different widths - just search for rivers in the spline search.

Take a look at the built in route Avery - Drexel to get ideas. You can also use these splines to connect water at one elevation to water at another. Add intermediate spline points and then adjust elevations as needed.

By accident i stumbled on your rquest for rivers which we have plenty here in thailand full and gorgeous to copy.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll try both the wire frame and spline techniques and report back on the progress.

Roy, school will be ending in a few weeks and I'll have a lot of free time. I'd like to have a look at Roi-Et and maybe get some first hand pointers on making my railroad empire :hehe:
