ok, so to start with, i have always loved trains and railways (cant explain why), but i know little about them... I bought TS12 the other day and finished the 4 tutorials but am wondering are they any more that i can do? as im not 100% sure about signals and some terms and such (it seems sometimes i can go through a red and not be in violation, don't understand?)

Also, while doing a few of the missions I came across a few odd things, there was one where all I had to do was ride along on a passenger train, after about 15 20 mins i stopped at a red signal and waited for 2 freight trains to pass... after that the signal never changed back to yellow or green. Another thing that happened to me while playing was that an AI train derailed and failed me? the AI train was doing its own thing, I only touched my train and all signalling and junctions were AI controlled. what happened? lol

Welcome to the world of Trainz - where you will experience all the emotions from pain and frustration to joy and elation. Some of the posters to these forums are more into the "pain" side but you will quickly spot which ones by their constant complaining :D

To answer your last point about the "AI" - do not assume that the "I" stands for intelligence - a train under AI control can do crazy things such as suddenly running backwards because that will give it a quicker path to its next destination. Designing layouts that work well for AI controlled trains is a real challenge.

... (it seems sometimes i can go through a red and not be in violation, don't understand?)...

Some red signals are 'Absolute' which means you must stop, some red signals are 'Permissive' which means you can pas them under certain conditions.

Getting the hang of it all takes a while, but hang in there and keep asking questions - that's what I did!

Oh - and Welcome Aboard...

Andy :)

yeah well i aint gunna give up playing any time soon... are there any more tutorials i can dl?
I can understand AI not being intelligent as in almost every game out there but it you would thing that the official routes would be made so that its impossible for them to do something stupid, although i don't actually know what happened as the screen fades black and quits to the main menu to fast

I'm still a noob but here are 2 suggestions

I've been into Trainz for just under 2 years and still have much to learn. But I believe the best way to master it is:
1. Develop your own routes and experiment.
2. Visit this forum on a regular basis.

Welcome to Trainz bjay, (may I call you Bjay?). I do hope the bjay stands for something like "Blue Jay" and not something else that could be acronym-ed as "bj", but I digress.

I'm posting to recommend registering your 12 with Planet Auran. Have a look at the bar above and click on "Serial Number". You'll find you get more help and answers to your questions when we can see you have registered version.

Actually my name is brad and my middle name is jay:D but i get that a lot lol
thanks for the info about registering the serial, didnt even think to do that. I'll head over to ts12 board and take a look around.

BradJay - hang in there! This entire Trainz thing is much more frustrating that you might imagine, but it is also rewarding. I've only been in here a couple of months, on TS2010 and at times feel worse than what you have said, but i must tell you to keep trying, keep playing with it, keep doing dumb things and slowly, very slowly, and even slower than that, you will pick up bits and pieces that make sense. I feel after 3 or 4 months that I am just beginning to understand this thing.
Spend time on the forum! Read alot, find any downloadable tutorials and articles that you can, read them. Then play around in your own scenarios. Finally - play around some more.
Worst case, buy a first class ticket (like I did) and down load a few more routes and play some more. Slowly, very slowly, little bits will make sense to you. As they are ever so slowly (like a glacier moving south) making sense to me.
