I was a bit worried of buying TRS2004 because I have Vista, but I found a copy for just £5 so decided it was worth the risk.

I worked out all except one part of getting it going, the final part I found in this link, http://www.razorbackrailway.com/apps/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=16&id=163&artlang=en

This is a short form of how to install and run Trainz2004.

1. When you insert the DVD, stop it from auto playing.
2. Use the file browser, browse to the DVD and right click on the file "setup.exe". Select "Properties" from the menu.
3. Click the "Compatibility" tab.
4. Put a check in the box "Run program in compatibility mode"
5. Make sure the drop down box shows "Windows XP (Service pack 2)"
6. Put a check in the box "Run program as administrator"

You can now press 'OK', then double click 'Setup.exe' to run it. Accept all defaults.

After it has installed, don't let it run itself yet because it will fail.

Now use your file browser to go to file:\\C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2004\Bin (or click that link to open the folder).

Now do the following with each file who'e extension is '.exe', there are 4 files.

2. Right click on the file. Select "Properties" from the menu.
3. Click the "Compatibility" tab.
4. Put a check in the box "Run program in compatibility mode"
5. Make sure the drop down box shows "Windows XP (Service pack 2)"
6. Put a check in the box "Run program as administrator"
7. Press 'OK'

There is also a link on your desktop called 'TRS2004', right click on this and do the same as above.

Ok, one more step and the part I couldn't work out, I will paste it from the link where I found it.

Open the following file in Notepad: ...\Auran\TRS2006\trainzoptions.txt
Be sure to use a plain text file editing program to edit this file. Do not use a program which adds formatting, such as Microsoft Works or Microsoft Word.
Anywhere in the file, add the following command on a line of its own and exactly as it is here:
-intro=disable

Save the modified file.

There is one part missing, you will find that you do not have permission to save the file, right click on it and give yourself full permission on the file. (I love windows security, no hacker would think of going in and giving themselves permission).

One more step. When you first run trs2004 and are presented with the launch menu, click on "Configure Trainz". In the tab 'Display Settings' select 'DirectX'.

Click 'OK'. That is it, ready to roll.

Currently I am the world's worst train driver, I have crashed and derailed loads of times and keep missing stations (so have to stop and sneak back hoping the passengers don't notice), Richard Branson wants to see me in his Office first thing tomorrow morning (gulp).

I can tell those who like me were unsure of whether Trainz was the right choice for a rail sim. I was instantly addicted, this sort of software will never be as prominent on the shelves as the shoot-em-ups, but for us who love trains, it is amazing.

Glad you got it going. Happy driving!

Would it be ok with you if I copied your excellent instructions and added them to our FAQ please? I would include a mention of you being their author of course.

John

Yes I would be happy for you to use my post in the faq.

I must say though that they ought to be a warning on the Trainz DVD box, something in the lines of "Warning, this software might make you late for appointments because it quickly becomes an addiction".
