New Trees on the dls?

stouthm

Get over it
Before I download any of these I want to make sure that they're not Pofig's trees under a different name. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

I Downloaded one and compared the Config file to one of Pofig's--- They look the same to me. Identical wording, and the:

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/

...that Pofig includes in his trees.

I don't know who this author is, this "urman_diesel" but unless it's Mr. Pofig under a different authorship, it looks suspiciously copied to me. If I'm wrong, I apologize to mr. Urman.

Cheers,

Dave

Andy --

That's a disappointment to me as I've downloaded some of the content and was planning to use it in an update of one of my routes.

Can you suggest alternative hight quality trees that are on the Download Station?

Phil

Phil, have you checked out the trees by McGuireL and Gawpo50? Those are great trees, and are what I use.

Regards,

Zachary.

Could the urman_diesel trees be Pofig assets but now with names in the title? If so that is fine with me. However, I would like that verified by urman_diesel. There is no information about the trees in the DLS Asset Details (CM 3.6). If no information is forthcoming then N3v should contact urman_diesel and determine the source and intent behind these assets.

Probably because Pofig's trees are not on the DLS, which makes them a major headache to find, and why I won't use them. Also, I don't seem to remember him using descriptive names, although I know so little about trees it doesn't make a big difference to me, but it may impact others who would benefit from a descriptive name.

Interestingly by my reading of the CC license, there is nothing to prohibit them from being uploaded to the DLS, since it specifically and explicitly permits sharing. I still think U_D should ask Pofig's permission though and give him credit if granted.

All of Pofigs trees are available for free download from his thread in the Freeware section of this forum, any registered Trainz member can have them, so why would you not want to use them?
There is also a post about why they originally could not be put on the DLS due to Speedtree license, but I think that has passed now. But don't quote me guys. :o

Because they are hosted off the DLS, which makes tracking down assets a big pain in the you-know-what, not to mention a lot of third-party sites have changed URLs or disappeared entirely. Pofig's trees are great, but McGuirel's and Jankvis' are better and, just as important, are easy to find for any recipients of routes.

And thats why this guys routes lag on the awesomeness, I use all of pofig tress, I can gurantee you that they are the most beautiful trees you will ever come across.... I thank pofig for them all the time!

Er, the problem with your theory: I only have one route on the DLS, and it uses mostly billboard trees, although it sure isn't a crappy little 70kb short haul route.

Pofig's trees aren't bad, but if you can get better trees and not have to engage in the Great KUID Chase, why not? It's a win-win. Possibly, that'll be a moot point if Pofig's trees are allowed to stay on the DLS. More options are better.

It was my understanding from pofig in regards to a question I asked in his thread, he might be considering uploading some of his trees to the DLS. This does not explain why his name would not be attached to them. There might have been some loss of the meaning of my question due to translation.

Note the "NC" (non-commercial) part of that license. By uploading to the DLS, "you grant to N3V a personal, transferable but non-exclusive license to those New Works in order that N3V can redistribute the New Works to third parties:
-
(a) by making the New Works available for download from the Auran Download Station for free or for payment;
-
(b) by including the New Works on a CDROM or DVDROM (or other storage medium) that is made publicly available for sale or that is given away; or
-
(c) both (a) and (b)."
-
(Source: Download Station License Agreement, clause 2.1 ("Grant of License").)

So the non-commercial Creative Commons licenses are not compatible with the DLS. I don't see how the other Creative Commons licenses without the non-commercial part (e. g. the CC-BY-SA) would not be compatible, however.

Zachary.

Can N3V tell us whether these trees are OK to download or are pirated from Pofig and breach his copyright? The big problem with the pofig trees is that they are not on the download station and it is quite complicated (why does he need three websites?) to download them. Clearly it is far better to have them on the DLS, but if we're to use these trees I need to know that they are kosher.

Can someone tell us about the status of these assets and what's going on in the 'world of Russian trees'?

Paul

As far as I know, Pofig would need to contact N3V directly with a claim of (copyright / license) infringement. Then, they would investigate.

Until I get a definite answer I'm going to stay away from these new trees. I agree with most of these replys that it's a shame that we have to dig around in order to find Pofig's trees. I got in on the ground floor when he was posting them here on the forum so I have most of them. Lucky me.

You may get an idea what is occurring from this post http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?77906-Speed-Tree-by-Pofig&p=934844#post934844 and a few posts after. Google translate on the links pofig provided may give you a vague hint. Problem was already reported when it first occurred.

Beginning to wonder if Speedtrees are worth all the hassle they seem to cause. IMO N3V need to hire, or come to some arrangement, with at least one of the SpeedTree guru's or even all of them, to create a decent range to be available on the DLS. No need then for anyone legally using Trainz to clone, pinch, steal, accuse or indulge in heated arguments, be nice if our tree people could pool their knowledge and work together.

I totally agree and have mentioned more than once that NV3 needs to pony up $$ and come to an agreement with pofig and his trees. They are best I know of. Any route that NV3 includes in future versions of Trainz without Pofig's incredible trees will be well below the established standard for route creation.
