So I just downloaded 2009 and installed it. I am pretty clueless about what to do next. The docs seem to be lacking. It seems that the 2006 guide is included not the 2009.

What should I be doing first to learn how to use the game? Are there tutorials? What about downloads? I am interested in the northeast area but I am not sure if i have what I need to run from Boston to DC or if I need to download anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is because 06 and 09 are practically the same from a user point of work. The improvement is under the system. There are other minor details you'll discover as you go along, and these have been around the forums long and wide.

Hello and welcome to Trainz!

You will soon learn that Trainz is an all encompassing world. Be prepared to say goodbye to you friends, family and loved ones. You will find Trainz is the ultimate addiction.

To get started and learn the game, start by loading the game and run some driver sessions. Then jump into surveyor and look over the layouts and see how track is laid, signals are placed and what additional buildings, scenery and rollingstock are built-in. Get a feel for how others have designed their "layouts" and try all the different rollingstock to find the types you like. When you have outgrown the supplied layouts you can create your own world using surveyor and use the built-in components or search the DLS and other websites for layouts, track, building, industries, scenery items and rolling stock to add.

When you get more advanced, you will be able to start re-skinning or even building your own buildings and rolling stock.

As you encounter questions that will definitly arise as you learn the game, use the search tool in the forums to search for answers and if you can't find the answer after exhausting your search efforts, use the appropriate forum thread and some one will happily provide insight.

Remember, Trainz is complex and will take time to learn. Be patient and above all have fun!

TS2009 has a learning curve , and there are some problems that are being resolved as I type ( It has been stated that '09 is a 'work in progress' ) . As suggested above , jump in and get your feet wet , try the sessions , build a small route in surveyor , as you learn you will most likely have questions . Most , if not all , have been addressed here on the Forum already . Check out the threads and posts in the TS2009 forum and use the ' search ' option . If you are still puzzled , simply post a thread , there are a multitude of members willing to help !

Or skip the training sessions, put together a train and, in DCC, run it your way. Worked for me. Maybe I will try a session some day but I have not yet and it has been 8 years.

"Asus A7N8X Deluxe, Athalon XP 2000+, 1G RAM, e-GeForce 6200 256MB, Audigy SE, Win XP, Duke Nukem 3D mouse pad, TS2009 SP1a(?)"

Duke Nukem! Wow - there's a flash from the past! What a great mousepad that must be...

Anyway, yes - Welcome to Trainz! It is not the most user-friendly or the most intuitive program you'll ever run, but take your time and you'll find your way around in no time. I recommend at least a couple of the tutorials, and I believe there is a section in the documentation that walks you through Surveyor. It is definitely neat to go run a train on a route you just created, no matter how simple and unadorned.

Have fun!

Welcome aboard!

The beauty and appeal of Trainz (for me, anyway) lies in the fact that you can do anything and everything that appeals to you! I've been Trainzing for eight years now and have maybe spent five minutes in Surveyor trying to make a route. On the other hand, I greatly enjoy operating sessions and spend hours (too many, sez my wife!) moving people and goods around the many fine routes that others have made. There is no right or wrong way to 'play' Trainz; do what you like and like what you do! Don't hesitate to ask questions here, but be sure to utilize the search function first.
