New to TS2010 - Looking for some guidance

Hi all, just bought TS2010 and am struggling a little bit figuring out how to navigate a few things, such as some operating details on the preloaded scenarios (try following the instructions but somehow can't seem to 'finish' a scenario), how to use Download Station and look for other routes/scenarios, and some other questions. Looks like there is a lot of support out there. I'd appreciate some sympathetic ears to some specific questions. Looking forward to talking with everyone.

First Question - Was doing the session on the CSX Saginaw Sub - Nocturnal Navigation. Got all the way to McGrew yard, thought I was following the instructions properly to get green signal by lining mcGX Over 2 switch. Did that I don't know how many times but never saw green signal. Admit I drove through the signal, parked the train on Track 1 per the instructions and moved engines to the shed. Not sure what's supposed to happen 'next', if anything.

Second Question - Download Station - Do you HAVE to have a FCT in order download anything? The page says if you have a current registered copy of TS2010 you should be good to go. I was looking to add some routes/scenarios to get started but have been unsuccessful so far. Perhaps I do not understand the 'lingo' properly and am trying to download something that's uncompatible w/TS2010. I saw an amazing route/scenario of the SP Tehachapi Loop Route when I bought TS2010 and was looking for it, but can't seem to locate it. I don't mind paying for things, just am struggling to find things. Any search/download advice is appreciated.

I had the same problem. Not all sessions are created equal. Some have excellent instructions and others really leave you in the dark. If you like switching operations, delivering cars to industries and picking up loads, give Switching Grogan Loop,<kuid2:32711:100108:1> a try.

Use Content Manager to download it so you will get all the dependencies.

There is no need to go to the DLS website. Content Manager bring it to you. Before you open Content Manager, make sure your computer is connected to the internet. When you then open Content Manager, give it a few minutes to update its database. Content Manager maintains a database of everything on the DLS that is compatible with your version of Trainz. It makes finding things quite easy.

Using the Search box on the left side of the window, you can do some rather fancy searches. Get familiar with this tool. You will use it a lot.

Now open the download box on the left side of the screen. Now, back in the main section of the screen, Search for sessions and find one you want to try, click on it and drag it to the download box. Then click on Start. Content Manager should then download everything you need to run the session, provided all the items are on the DLS. Some content creators post their creations elsewhere which can be a real "search for a needle in a hay stack" to find it. The first place to ask is the creator of the route. If you look in the config.txt file for each asset, you should be able to find an email address for the creator. (Where else do you get to play detective?) You can always ask here for more help.

And welcome to Trainz.

David

PS: You do not NEED to have a FCT, but it is sure worth it. Your download request gets higher priority and there is no daily limit.

Welcome to Trainz! I hope you have fun!

Nope, FCT not required. I don't have one, I just keep hitting download until it starts.

Not an FCT is not required... but...

I'm so tight I sqeek... and delayed getting an FCT for a couple
years. Had a weak moment an bought a years worth, $25 bucks.

Its due to expire in a couple months now.

My advice... GET one. You will not reqret it.

I definitly will renew at the first sign it's about to expire.

It makes things SO much easier it's just not worth the
time wasted in not having the faster speed.

If your a die hard trains fan and really get into this thing
it's a must have.

Yes, long live the FCT... i have to renew it mine, now on my new TS2010. Please, if someone could help me... i've installed the Public Beta Patch over my last SP3 (build 44088), and yes, now i have the build 46170. But i want to return to my previously build 44088. Is that possible without installing once again that long train of TS2010 + SP1, SP2, SP3... ?

Thank you.

Thank you.

Nope, that's why the instructions said to make a duplicate of your TS2010 folder.

The only way to drop back to 44088 is to reinstall TS2010, then SP1 then the SP3+hotfix installer (you don't need to redo SP2 or SP3 themselves, since there is a patcher to go to the 44088 'hotfix' direct from SP1 (41491 iirc)

Edit:

It appears 41491 is the original TS2010, so you don't need SP1 either, just reinstall 2010, then grab the 41491_to_44088 hotfix patcher

Edit #2 :

In case you've forgotten, this has the location of the hotfix patches:

Yeah, great... i don't have such a duplicate, actually i forgot to make one. Just going to reinstall now. Many thanks for that fast response.

Cheers.

Hijacked Thread

Ameitzler,

It looks like your thread has been hijacked. This happens when people are too lazy to start their own thread that concerns their own problem. Hope you are learning how to download using ContentManager.

Back : My fresh install of TS2010 have build number 42203. I'm just upgraded right now to 44088, but i have to stop to this SP. No more multiplayer patch, because with this one the game became too slow (i don't know why... ) Anyway, another question is... have anyone problems with the trains (BVB's) of the Berlin U-Bahn on TS2010 ? I can't see these in game, and on CMP says that these items are obsolete. What that means ?

Thanks.

David - thanks for the suggestion that you made to the original poster - and no, I am not trying to hijack his thread, I'm on the same steep learning curve that he is on.

It appears that by clicking and reclicking and reclicking again and again and again; one can get lucky and have a download actually start. So I am trying to download the Switching Grogan Loop as you suggested. I appears to be downloading a whole bunch of stuff, I just hope it keeps working and that this really does work. Previously I have not been able to download anything, so this feels like great success to me. I look forward to trying this scenario.

And more than anything wanted to say thanks for clear and to the point guidance that you gave.

BUT - there is always a "but".
It downloaded wonderfully, but how do I use this? I am assuming it is a scenario of some sort. Great, what "route" does it work on? Do I need to download something else to make it work? How do I see this as something I can use / drive in Trainz?

I gotta tell you, I love the possibilities available in Trainz, but (there's that word again), I am so frustrated with the learning curve!

Anything to help a fellow curmudgeon. Once everything is downloded, go to Routes and select the Downtown Traction Company route. When you do, it should list the sessions for the route and Switching Grogans Loop should be there. Double Click on the session and you will be in for several hours of non-stop fun.

David

PS: I have found it well worth the cost to get a First Class Download Ticket. When you have one, you get high priority with the download servers and don;t have to wait and wait for an opening. There are several hundred thousand assets you can access for free and when you get into creating your own routes, you will want access to all of these.
