Welcome to Trainz! :D

If by "tracks or things" you mean routes and scenery, etc. objects, respectively, then there are gobs of content out there for you. While the Trainz Download Station (DLS) has lots of good stuff on it for you, you would have to by a First Class Ticket (FCT) in order to access the DLS, as the Ultimate Trainz Collection (UTC) went un-supported by Auran in September 2010. However, there are many gobs of great content hiding out on third-party websites for free. I would suggest http://trainz.luvr.net as a start, as it has many gobs of goodies that are compatible with UTC. Also, check out the Trainz Resources Directory (http://trainzresources.com/directory/), which has a list of third-party websites for you to go and check out for Trainz content.

Also, the Surveyor module in Trainz is what you use to create your own railway layouts to drive trains on. With the right skill, you can create very true-to-life and realistic layouts. That is what makes Trainz in many ways a world simulator, not just a train simulator.

And, since you have the Ultimate Trainz Collection, you also have Trainz Paint Shed, which allows you to create your own paint jobs for locomotives and rolling stock (non-locomotive train cars).

And, just as a tip, your version of Trainz, UTC, is old and de-facto obsolete in the modern Trainz community. Thus, you may find users saying "Just get Trainz Simulator 2010" (the latest version). Do not feel obligated to do so, as TS2010 is for sale for $50 bucks from Auran (although you could get a copy from eBay, etc. for much less. Just make sure that you would buy a brand-new sealed copy, as used copies are dangerous). Enjoy the version of Trainz that you have, as it still has many great possibilities.

If you know how to create 3D models in modelling software such as 3DS Max or its free cousin gmax, then you can also create your own models for Trainz (such as scenery, etc.).

Regards.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

I do agree with Retro00064, UTC is getting on a bit, but a lot of people will say get Trainz 2010, what some don't tell you is that Trainz 2010 is a bigger Trainz programme than ever before, and demands a lot more from your computer, so you may need to upgrade your computer as well, which in this day and age can be expensive, my advice is, if you see a copy of Trainz 2004,Trainz 2006, Trainz 2009, then your computer will run these, as I jumped from UTC to Trainz 2004, to Trainz 2006, to Trainz 2009 without changing my computer, it was only when I jumped to Trainz 2010 that I did notice performance drop and stuttering of trains and computer crashes on long routes.

Hope this helps

when i download a file how do i open it or run it with UTC

Do you mean when you get a .cdp file, and you want to install it to get the content contained within? Well, just double-click the .cdp file, and Content Dispatcher should open to allow you to install the content. ;)

You need a moderate, to high end, desktop to run 09/10.

A $ 400 bargain desktop will probably not be able to run it.

Most laptops will not run 09/10 at all.

Fact: Most laptops are not good for Gaming at all.

I saw a $ 1395.00 I-7 :mop: :udrool: :mop: 2.75Ghz laptop and it will run 09/10, there is another $ 900 Laptop that will also.

04/06, and all the old versions of Trainz run on just about every old desktop & laptop PC.

There are still quite alot of satisfied 04/06/UTC ... users.

However a FCT is pretty much a necessity, asside from 3rd party sites.

canyourunit.com http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/ is a site that will test your PC for Trainz

I run TRS2004 on my laptop (what I am using now ;)). ;) It can get pretty slow on a detailed layout, but then again, my laptop has a wimpy 1 gigabyte of memory :o (which I would like to upgrade some day ;)), so that probably explains that. ;)
