Hi
Total computer novice / thicko here. I have purchased a new pc but havent got a clue what to do about all my TRS2004 stuff on my existing pc. I have loads of stuff from the Downloads Station ( layouts, rolling stock, locos etc) plus a fair amount of payware stuff ( Railwaves and Total Model Trainz ).

I ve been told by the pc store that games, downloads etc cannot be transferred onto my new machine. Am I being fobbed off? Do I have to start all over again from scratch?

If there is away of transferring ll my stuff onto my new pc can anyone give me an idiot proof guide?

Help!!

Cheers

You could always stick the old HD into the new machine if the machine has more then 1 HD bay... Or you can buy an external HD enclosure and go about transferring files that way....
Either way you go about it you will need to reinstall the programs, however the installation would be very quick since all the files are already present on the drive. It would just need to be installed to update the registry.

I have basically done what Gandalf444 suggests. I purchased a portable 250GB USB HD (approximately the size of a pack of king size cigarettes) and transferred (sent) my Trainz2006 program and files to it. Had to change file system to NTFS, but I now have two identical setups and no worry about losing files, routes or downloads.

Not exactly what I had in mind, but will work just as well if you want to keep the other computer intact. Otherwise I would just take the HD out and plop it in the new computer along with the one it comes with.

On the old computer:
Assets that you've created yourself (layouts, driver sessions and maybe others) are in sub-folders of this folder:
C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2004\World\Custom

Assets that you've downloaded and installed are in sub-folders of this folder:
C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2004\World\Dispatcher\Downloads

After installing TRS2004 and bringing it up to SP4 on the new computer, you then need to copy those folder trees from the old computer to the new computer. There are various ways, such as:
Over a network, wired or wireless.
Via one or writable CD's or DVD's.
Via a USB memory key (this will require many cycles if you have a lot of data to transfer).

Don't delete anything from the old computer until you are sure it's operative on the new computer and backed up.

If all this is a mystery, your best bet is to become familiar with using Windows Explorer to view, create, copy, move, rename and delete files and folders. Create a new folder such as C:\Test and play in there.

I had copied the entire TRS2004 and TRS2006 folders to DVD about 2 weeks before my computer went down. I merely copied those folders to my daughter's computer for the 3 months it took to get my computer fixed. It worked fine on my daughter's computer. I did not have to re-install and patch TRS2004 or TRS2006. All my downloaded stuf worked fine. Yeah, I was suprised too.

Hi

Many many thanks for the info thus far. will have a go at the above ideas. have an issue bafore that regarding XP and Vista. Please see other thread " Which type and Why" . Any further help gratefully received.

Is 2006 different?

I have the same new PC problem but the instructions don't make sense on my PC. I have 2006 and whilst do have a 'C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2006\World\Custom' folder, I do not have a 'C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS200\World\Dispatcher\Downloads' folder. I do not wish to loose my downloaded assets. Is the file structure different in 2006? and if so where does the downloaded stuff live.

Go to the C:/Program files/Auran/TRS2006 folder. Then look for the folder named local. Copy that folder to the new HD as well as a file called assets.tdx, then just place those 2 things back into the TRS2006 folder on the new computer.

which is better?

Is it better to use CMP to copy to the new PC, I thought it only copied the locally created layout etc. are you saying that it can be used to transfer the lot (Download station stuff as well) ?

If you do what I said in my post above...You do not need CMP...All you would need to do is install TRS2006 onto the new computer(update it after) then place those 2 files into the installation folder(much like on your old computer) except your gonna by placing them instead of taking them.

TRS2006, TC and TS2009 don't use the kuid folder system that TRS2004 uses. Instead, they store assets in a database which can only be accessed with CMP. You can't use ODBC or SQL etc because the database format is non-standard.

It worked!

Thanks, Gandolf0444! I just copied the Local folder and assets.tdx to my new computer and I got everything! I previously tried archiving to CMP but it came across corrupt and caused more problems elsewhere. I am a newbie to this so I appreciate the tips!
