hi, i am chris from the u.k.:)
i recently bought trs2004 and have been building my mega empire with glee! however, i need some help to progress and i find myself a bit stuck. i have been trying to download some locos etc. from sites outside the dls and seem to have them on my hard disk, but i don't know how to get them into trainz. i am a bit of a pc lettuce at the moment but i am learning:eek: . the site (subpar) told me that trainz was not installed on my machine but if i do install it i can't do anything else ie. i can't minimize it so i can access a website. what do i do? forgive me if i am being dim but i have tried the sensible things like opening the website while in the dls but get the same message:'( .

also, where does one go to learn about building things/stock? scratch-building i can do in reality but how is it done on a pc?

finally, to all those who offer their work on the dls i am really grateful. maybe one day i can offer something too.

any help with these would be much appreciated.

chris

Hello

Hello Chris,
Well, you're not a million miles away from me, I live near Heathrow, so in Trainz member terms we are next door neighbours.
When you download content it should be in the form of a cdp and have a green icon. You will need to download to a given place on your PC. I made a folder on C:/ drive called Auran daily downloads and put them there.
Once you have them all you need to do is double click the green icon and the install proceedure will start and then just follow the buttons, it's very easy.
Many, or should I say most, locos need dependencies so you will need to look out for those but then you go to download the site should either tell you are a screen show them below the download link for the loco. Sometimes these come as a zipped file so you will need to get Winzip to unpack them. For this I use subfolders for each loco or whatever I am D/Ling if more than one to prevent confusion.
Once unpacked again it is just clicking the green icons to install.

Check the DS daily because fresh assets often go up on a daily basis, but not on the weekend.

I am not into creating assets, just routes and there are quite a few of my UK ones on the DS. John Whelan is the guy to talk to about creating content.

My advice is do not rush to put a route up, I didn't until I had worked on getting textures and scenery right and that took a couple of years. Now, if I look at some of my older routes I cringe, they are awful. Get used to the program and be patient is the advice I offer,

Hope this helps.

Oh, BTW, welcome to the forums.

Angela

Sorry about that!

Really, I don't know what happened. I clicked to send the post and it sat trying for about 8 minutes, then I gave up and disconnected from the Internet.
So why 3 copies appeared is beyond me. The forum I found very slow.

Hope it doesn't do the same with this!

Angela

Angela, somehow your post ended up posted three times!
Funny how that happens some times eh?

Welcome to the forums Chris, I'm sure you'll find this a very enjoyable place if you conduct yourself uprightly and are patient.
I'm sure you will be.

Always feel free to ask questions, but always remember to do a little research of your own too.

Cheers,
Woody:wave:

Welcome to the forums Chris

Here you will find many many helpful fellow Trainzers that you can ask anything

I also have TRS2004 (as well as later TS2009 and TS2010) but I found that TRS2004 version does most of what I want, to check content I make for all versions.

The cdp from downloads should self-install

If you are emailed a cdp then either double click on it (self install) or save to a location on your hard-drive and double click.

Chris,

What type of files have you downloaded?

cdp's - double-click, should install via a utility program built-in to TRS2004
exe's - double-click, should install themselves
rar - extract contents, then see what you've got
zip - extract contents, then see what you've got
other - ask at the source or here

HTH, John

Be sure the window is checked not to close after the CDP is downloaded, you need to click "open" afterward.

Welcome to the very addicting world of Trainz, as if you haven't already found out! You'll find your days will turn into nights and chores will never get done. :D

I highly recommend that you obtain a copy of Trainz Objects. This is a nift utility that will help repair faulty assets so they will render properly in TRS2004.

I too started with TRS2004 and have since moved up through TRS2006, TS2009, and now TS2010. It's a great program that has a lot of nice things to do, and plenty to learn about.

thank you everyone.....however.....

thanks everyone for your responses. i have looked at the download issue and have discovered the following. i followed all the on-screen instructions when i installed trs, however, i have to keep disc 1 in my cd-rom drive. i looked in 'my computer' and, sure enough, i have a number of files relating to locos etc. in my download file. i took the advice about double-clicking on the green icon, got a message about letting an unknown publisher make changes to my pc, which i allowed to happen, but then got TRAINZ IS NOT INSTALLED ON THIS MACHINE - PLEASE INSTALL TRAINZ. it seems as if trs is in my D drive and not on my C drive which is, possibly, why my pc doesn't recognize it. it does, however, put a little mallard icon on my screen. this is how i access the game. now i am confused again.....

my route is north american circa 1950s and is inspired by a lot of pictures in books given to me mostly by my grandmother. model layouts have provided inspiration such as the sunset valley, crooked mountain lines, north american lines and others. also a hefty dose of cumberland and pennsylvania helps to shape my thinking. trs gives me unlimited space to let my imagination rip. i don't think i could fit this into a spare room unless the fleet of 747's were parked somewhere else first.

i hope i have explained this adequately - it is a little frustrating!

but thanks for all the advice and hospitality.

chris

Welcome. Let us know if you get your problems fixed. If not then we will try to help you get the game up and running so that you too can get addicted.

Yes this has happened to me before. It was some very old content that came in a proprietry zip format, which wouldn't install when I double-clicked on it but gave the same error message as you have chris.

I'm afraid I never did get to install it - I assumed it was for a older version of trainz than I was running. Perhaps if you mention the file and where it's from, people may be able to give you better advice.

Sorry to be of no help - but welcome aboard anyway.

i have some idea what's going on...........

the items are locos and their common files from subpar productions and some narrow gauge locos from slugsmasher. i think the trouble is that trs is not sitting on my c drive but is running from my d drive. this may be my own fault - i am sure it is. i am not particularly pc confident yet. trouble is how do i get it onto my c drive and bring my large and painstakingly whittled layout and downloaded content with it. i am afraid to try to reinstall it as i got a message asking if i wanted to UNinstall it. fear is a powerful thing! i assume that the layout is stored on the cd-rom rather than my laptop so should come as part of the package. any of you IT heads able to help me? i have, by-the-way just got paintshed and objectz. now i need to find the objectz modifier thingy that will let me reconfigure stuff. this is all rather technical - i will learn.

any advice for a baffled englishman?

chris

Hi It should not matter that you have it installed on D drive.
I have Tranz versions installed on my D drive and H drive which is a separate drive and it contains TRS20004 TRS 2006 and TC3 my D drive contains 09 and 2010 as well as UTC.
Any content you downloaded will be on your PC and not on the CD you have to keep in your drive .
Since its on D you should open D look for program files and locate the Auran folder
In there open the world folder then the dispatcher folder and inside is a folder called Downloads this is where your Downloads are located in the form of kuid folders.
If you have saved layouts they will be in world/ custom/ maps
You will find when you put in your CD it will ask if you want to uninstall, this is normal but don't let it uninstall if you just want to run the game.
But if you did want to uninstall you first need to back up the following folders Custom & Downloads to another location on your PC ,say My documents.
Ps you should look in TRSD2004 forum since it contains FAQ and Stickys with advice on TRS2004
