Needing DEM Help...

Stuck With a Bad Username
Hello there fellow Trainzers,

Well, I will admit that I posted my most recent DEM request out of some raging frustration. So, disregard it. I now have a new motive. Since it's summer break for me now, I have decided that ITS TIME TO LEARN TRANSDEM!!!! My past frustration with it drove me away from it, but now its been pestering me to LEARN IT!
Since I am really wanting to do a DEM for the Proviso, IL to Clinton, IA route (The UP Geneva Sub), I've decided that now would be a good time to learn it! No longer shall I be dependent on others to make my DEMs! :Y:

So, here is what I am wanting in the DEM:

1/3 Data Resolution
Overlay Map that gives positions of buildings, Yards, Bridges, and all that stuff
Of course, Full coverage of what I wish to model!

I have read through many tutorials of using TransDEM, but they seem a tad bit complex for a DEM amateur like this guy. ;)

So, this goes out to all TransDEM users...could ya'll please give me a set of more simplified step-by-step instructions on how to construct my DEM, from data downloading to loading it into the game?

Oh yeah, Just for reference....I'm using TS2009. :)

Thanks for all the help! Its greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

-Skylar :D

G'day quakers1,

Crikey, I don't know how simplified or 'step by step' in nature the built in Tutorials provided by "the good doctor" with TransDEM could be! They are certainly comprehensive. He covers the download and and processes of getting the 1/3 NED DEM data in them (as well as providing links for where to get them) and clearly shows how to go about processing them in TransDEM. There are also a number of tutorials covering the gathering of this data by "mrscsi" in the TransDEM forum, here...

http://forum.transdem.de/index.php

...where you must, naturally, enough, register to become a member to gain access (something which, under the circumstances, I would strongly advise)...

...as for the overlay maps, your requirements suggest that only Google Earth orthophotos would be "the bee's knees", so I would recommend you look into how to add UTM tiles to your route. This is also covered in the aforementioned Tutorials...

Hey Jerker,

Now that I have the time (unlike back in January), I will sit down and read the tutorial you linked to. The program seems real easy to use, but I just wasn't sure where to start.

Thanks so much for linking to that tutorial! And as for UTM tiles, those would be EXCELLENT!!! :D

Cheers,

-Skylar:)
