Need to transfer content from TRS2009 to TS2010... and I'm lost!

My searches have come up blank. Probably using the wrong keywords.

I've been on other projects for a while and I've forgotten a lot about the tech side of Trainz.

Like the subject states... I finally have 2010 installed on a new comp and I want to transfer everything I have from 2009 on the old comp to 2010 on the new and make a backup in the process.

Would someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction. I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right place for my content.

Kick in butt not needed but would be appreciated.

You can get a flash drive, then locate the Trainz 2009 folder in the C drive, find the local folder and then copy that folder to the flash drive. You can drag each sub folder that is located in the local folder in the trainz 2010 cmp. After everything commits, you should have everything from trainz 2009 in trainz 2010.

I don't have a "CMP" folder. I'm assuming it's because I have no custom content. Do I go ahead and make a new "CMP" folder?

Or are you refering to... C:\Program Files (x86)\GAMES\TS2010\UserData\local

In your cm do a search for "my content" you'll see a tag at the top for this, this will bring up everything you've downloaded. R/click, select all, r/click again and select make cdp. Send cdp to desktop (for usb) or direct to flash drive.
Transfer using a usb cable or big flash drive.
You might also want to do the same for locally modified assets, but they'll more than likely be downloaded anyway.

and then in 2010 cm... I just import the CDP... and I already have a back up!

So I've started the export process.
Where is CM exporting all these things to?
If I cancel and start again later, will it remember where it left off?

just copy ur local folder on some media and then paste anywhere on your new pc and from content manager do import contents and select this folder this will install all ur contents.if u cancel it it will stop but if u restart it will search the whole folder and replace existing contents that are already installed and start installing new content.

I just did it and it took me an hour and a half but its worth it. I'll have my LOCAL folder available if its ever needed.

The simplest way to transfer the whole folder without involving a flash drive (which almost certainly won't fit your entire installation at one time, and assuming you have a router/cable modem that allows you to connect more than one computer) is to create a Share on the old machine and just copy everything to the new machine. I do recommend following the other's advice for backing up only critical, irreplaceable assets like routes; it's a good idea to make CDPs of that anyway even if you weren't copying your installation as a standard backup procedure. But this method will save lots of time. Let me know if you want help with this. Alternatively, copying your existing installation piecemeal to a flash drive then back to the new machine may work as well.

So, I copied everything in my "E:\TRS2009\Local" folder to a drive with room for 10GB.

So if I just copy to "C:\Program Files (x86)\GAMES\TS2010\UserData\local" that will work? I'm assuming the database would be rebuilt anyway.

Or, should I do what another suggested and import everything with CM?

Ok, based on your above post, I take it you managed to fit your entire TS2009 installation onto your spare disk. If that's right, you can either A. copy the installation whole to your new computer and use it as-is or, B. if what you're trying to accomplish is to merge the 2009 installation into TS2010 as per your original post, is to go into TS2010's CMP, and, under File select Import Content. Navigate to the Userdata\original folder for TS2009 on your spare direct and hit Ok. It should find and import all content. It'll import CDPs automatically too, but you don't need to have your content in CDP form for this to work. It'll also find content in subfolders/subdirectories too. Repeat for Userdata\local and allow it to overwrite existing content.

If your Trainz installation is, say, 87Gb (like Kamran's) and that drive only holds 10, then you're going to have to go through at least 9 cycles of copying to the spare disk then copying again from the spare disk to the new computer - 18 in all. The fileshare method only requires one copy and write cycle.

The drive I copied to had 53GB available and I only had 10GB to copy. Going back and re-reading I understand the confusion, sorry. I now have the folder shared and will do the transfer to TRS2010 tonight over my network. That way when I scrub TRS2009, I have a backup also. Thanks for your concern. I just need to know which method to use... copy or import.
