Need help with scripting please

I want to write a script so that a driver is added to the cab dependant on the direction of travel in an engine with a cab at each end. I have tried looking into existing script files to get an idea of what I need to do but have not found one simple enough for me to understand what is going on because the ones that I have looked for involve scripting for lamps, couplers, vac pipes etc. I have looked at the tutorials on wiki but they relate to scenery objects so I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction please to allow me to start learning the 'art' of scripting.

Thanks Bob, I have had a look at the tutorials listed and cant immediately see what I need but will take a closer look.
