Need help identifying this unit, please.

steamdrivre

Narrow gauge or nothing
Hi,
My friend took this pic and it was as close as he could get. He saw the word, TEXAS, on it.
Can anyone identify it and give any details as you know them?

Thanks,

Hi Rick,

It's a F7 unit by the basic shapes of it and the amount of windows on it's side. The paint scheme on it isn't ringing a bell however.

Do you know the location of the photograph in question? Migth help a little bit for territory of the railroad using it. Texas along with railroad searched in Google brought up nothing of real use.

However the Texas State Railroad is a very good canindate for the picture. The search however doesnt reveal anything. This picture I found looks a lot like it but is labeled Rock Island.

Thats really all I can tell you. I will keep looking however.
Best of luck.

Cheers,
Adam

Hi, Adam. How the heck are you? Happy New, bud. Thanks.
It's a project he's working on and I'm only into steam so couldn't help him. I thought I'd post a help thread over here.

It maybe located here, Alco Engine Rebuilding Plant in Mt Vernon Il.

Rick,

Thank you, I am very well. Hope your new year went well like mine did, lets not get into that however.:p

I just finished my search on Google and found nothing.
Where was this photograph taken? A possible date could help too please.

Cheers,
Adam

C&NW did it for freight also. Check pics of GP50s, I think SD40-2s also, RRmods has payware freight diesels with nose bells.

Yes, they did on SD40's I'm pretty sure this one was a CNW unit because its number is 407 although its painted for another line, sometimes they keep the original number, Illinois Railway Museum owns CNW 411 and it was recently restored. Take a look at the pics on thier web site.
Cheers, Woody.

that looks more like an Algoma Central F-7 phase II locomotive. could have been a CN&W unti a long time ago but that looks like an Algoma alright.

No, I don't believe it was ever an Algoma Central, it has a similar paint scheme but it looks like its painted for some Texas Commuter or dinner train.
By the way this unit was at National Railway Equipment Co. in Mount Vernon Illinois.

It's definately an ex-CNW unit. There are more obvious details the rotary beacon an the HEP Generaote Exhaust stack that's barely visible.

Its a C&NW for sure.

Yes, but many newer roads paint units in a scheme from long ago. SR6900 pointed out the other details like the beacon which I thought of after my last post. Like I said, go to the Illinois Railway Museum web site and look at C&NW #411 and you will see alot of simularities between the two locomotives!
Cheers, Woody.
