Neat Pictures

So, I was exploring the areas in my town that used to have track, and I found something interesting. We used to have a tannery in our town. It was recently blown up to make room for condos... that was halted when... SURPRISE... the ground was too contaminated.

So, I decided to explore the area around the building as I heard that it once had a rail siding. So I took these pictures of what I found. :)

The last few are actually in Montague near an old Dupont Chemical plant.

And for those of you who want to see it.... the video of the tannery being blown up! :o

Oh, you would not believe, I've seen old worn out tracks acually go right down into a swamp...submerged that is. I guess the swamp formed after the tracks were abandoned.

Yes, there is a mystique about the abandoned tracks. Here are a few shots from the SAL/SCL Durant to Willow (Sarasota area) line. The line split off of the (now) CSX tracks near my home in Durant. I'll put a link to the web site I found the pics on. They are not my own. The also line ran through Lithia, FL along Boyette Road, where my grandparents lived, not far from where I lived. The tracks were still there when I was young, and there was an occasional movement. From what I understand, at that time circa 1980ish, the line was used for storage and maybe a rare local or detour. I used to sit by them and play around them in the summer hoping for a train to come down the rusty tracks. I think the only time I ever saw a train there was one time while on the school bus since it crossed the line every day. The Juice Train originally used the line but that was before my time. I know there was a Durant station long ago too but I can't figure out where it was, and have had no luck googling it for photos or other info. Check out the web page, there is also a GO F-unit that is owned or leased by the Gulf Coast Museum.

Have you tried going to the city hall and see if they have any old maps? I was able to get a whole bunch of information about the railroads in my area from the mayor of the city.
