NASA spacecraft barreling toward a Mars landing

The reason why Kennedy wanted to be the first to land a man on the moon ... was only to beat the Russians to it ... once we got there, all we found was a planetiod of dust and minerals, of little worth.

We must go much further to discover life on other planets ... into the next galaxy perhaps ... maybe closer.

Mars is 360F in the sun, and -360F on the dark side ... 1000 times more uninhabitable than Antarctica :hehe:

Yes, you are correct(of course!).

Russia(then the Soviet Union), was the first to orbit the planet and Mr. Kennedy came up with a "one-up."

There is nothing wrong with a good competition!

I think far too often we get rather carried away with the hype on space. It may be because we have been brought up with sci-fi films and space comics but to be frank I think that the Mars thing is a total and scandalous waste of money that is very needed elsewhere.

People will huff and puff on the wonderful advantages of one day going to Mars which is a pointless thing unless you want to walk about a desert encumbered in a space suit and a field for boredom. Okay we got space blankets and pens that wrote upside down after the moon but in real terms this fanaticism about space is something else.

And again, if it was discovered that maybe there could possibly have been some form of prehistoric life in tiny, microscopic size so what? It does nothing to help the needy and unfortunate millions back home and even in the US itself. Oh, sure there will be waxing lyrically on it but once you get beyond all the theorising and propaganda it is a negative exercise. People cannot walk about and live on Mars like here and it would also be as boring as Hell seeing red everywhere.

No doubt sci-fi lovers will be offended at me challenging the steryotype science attitude to space but wanting to go to a dead planet and do what? As a Glaswegian I have even seen more sense in visiting our old rival, Edinburgh than the vast amounts of money to keep scientists happy and those who follow their every word as a wow factor. I have enjoyed the occasionally space film but it is not based on any reasonable sense of reality and I gave up reading Superman and that stuff when I was a youngster. Boy, oh boy, what a wonderfully expensive dose of escapism. Give me reality every time!

Hi,

quoting you:
"No doubt sci-fi lovers will be offended at me challenging the steryotype science attitude to space..."

Seriously, I don't' see anything wrong with your comments ... they are all good points, and what you are saying is true on many levels -- But what's also true is that, we the USA, has spend countless of money on programs to help people who are poor, people who need a hands up to get on thier feet, etc ... there are charists and churches (I attend church so I know the work we put in) to help people who don't have all that much in this world, and yet, it's still the same as it was in the 60s, when it all began!

However, how nuch is enough? -- I was raised in the deep heart of the South Bronx, and I can tell you right now that there many poor folks that rather get a check from the government then to get up to go to work -- what I am saying here is that is not always black and white!!! One can't just throw money and money at folks endlessly .... people too need to stand up and do their part to get ahead on this world!!

Now, yes, going to Mars in this current era is a bad idea, except for sending robots, etc ... there's lots and lots of issues to discuss before sending anyone to Mars -- one issue is how people would interact with each other on a profeesional, emotional and intimate levels --- so, for now, yes, it's pointless to spend money sending anyhore there -- But sending robots to study the planet is a worhty idea and mission!

Nevertheless, one day, one generation will see a space ship head out toward Mars ... that I believe! .. Because look at the evidence all around us today, in this techo media craze we live in today ... we have nothing like it in the early 90s, etc... Just look how much humanity have done in 100 hundreds .. from horses to cars .... there weren't even tooth brushes til the 20's if my history surf me correctly --

My point is that there is always those small steps, and this is a small step, and it's a good step for now --- when the technology becomes avaiable, which I feel is generations away, then folks can sit down and finanally crunch the numbers ... But til then I just hope you enjoy Mars from a Trainz-point-view! LOL

Thanks for your point of views!!
Ish

The thing is; it would require more funding than all the nations GDP in the world to establish a colony on another planet. As Ish has said, there are many barriers between now and then to overcome. I believe what most people don't grasp is that the government is unable to "save" an economy by throwing money at it. The only thing a government can grow is itself, and that just siphons money away from the economy. "Jobs programs" don't work because the wages are paid in taxes, so the end result is no greater than the beginning, because no new wealth has been created. It's similar to the water being recycled in an aquarium, and if it requires new taxes; it's worse! The best thing a government can do is to loosen regulations that prevent the growth of new business. Only the private sector can create new jobs and new wealth.

Interesting reflections there Ish and I am a Kirk member myself here in Scotland (look that one up!). I dare say they will still go like excited people to Mars. It is just so pointless human-wise as it is a barren place and constant red dust and equally boring mountains doesn't excite me at all. Here we are going to be spending more money on our greatly used railway system which is overwhelmingly passenger and that beats Mars for me (!).

HOLY HOWIE...!

 Spending the money to revitalize passenger and add HSR sounds wonderful to me!

Sorry are we talking about Scotland here? ;) (disclaimer, this is a joke. Scotland is a fine country with a rich cultural and industrial history and many, many beautiful mountains.)

A quick check shows that NASA's budget is less than 1% of the total federal budget. Britain canned its space programme just a few years before it might have begun to generate income by launching commercial satellites. China, India and Japan have all joined the list of payload capable nations.

Why explore space? I suspect the real answer is George Mallory's famous quote about why he wanted to climb Mount Everest, "because it's there".

Have You Seen The Latest Photos of "Curiosity" rover ?

Oh NO ... The Earth creature has stolen the Eludium Q36 Explosive Space Modulator !

Actually the way it was lowered by cables, onto the surface was quite ingenious ... I can't wait for Ford or GM to do a superbowl add of their pickup trucks being placed on Mars using the same technique ! :hehe:

Hey Cas,

Funny stuff there! LOL

On the second pix: Putting all our opinions aside for and against going to space, we do have to admit ... it's pretty cool -- it is another world!!!

Ish

Oh, I know you jest amigacooke! I nearly said Outer Mongolia! At least we have villages, houses, people, roads, things to do. However I think cascaderailroad has definitively said it all. :hehe:

That thing was comming in really FAST ... It musta' skeered' the jeepers' outa' the Martians ... "Holy Schmoke', Were being invaded", "Well, There goes the neighborhod" !

Well it looks like something has started up with the discussion on the latest Mars landing and the future of mankind to conquer yet another far flung land be it Mars - it has been acknowledged that the feat of sailing 11 wooden sailing ships filled with convicts from England to Australia (The First Fleet) is akin to sending a probe to Pluto - well that's been done and the damn thing is still going (Mariner 1).

I honestly believe that industry will be the driving force to put a permanent human presence on Mars and that's where the money will come from (Hollywood has paraded that notion for some time - Avatar etc etc)

Industry has benefited from the space program - we all have with computers that fit in our pockets - modified foods - textiles - new metals etc etc. So industry will have to take up the gauntlet and go where no man has gone before - there are profits to be made out there and enough billionaire despots around to do it - We have a mining magnat by the name of Clive Palmer in Australia that's wants to build a Jurassic Theme Park and the Titanic 2015 version a couple of casinos to get the Chinese to pay fo it all - gotta love crazy rich people.
Oil today - Mars tomorrow

I'm not sure why all this speculation is taking place. As the photo shows, not only was Isambard Kingdom Brunel a great engineer and a consumate performer in Olympic opening ceremonies, but he was clearly the first man on Mars.

I gotta agree with you there Ish6. Little green men on Mars don't vote and contribute to poltitians campaigns so it won't get funded.

Astronomy is neat tho. I've had a telescope of one size or another since I was around 10 (I turned 69 yesterday). Current one is a light bucket. Star SplitterII Dobsonian with a 30 inch diameter mirror ground as an f-3.95. Takes up half the garage but hoo-boy can I ever see the neighbors old lady (ony kidding - it won't focus that close which considering what she looks like is probably a blessing in disguise, lol).

As I understand it they are already geting some great photos from it.

Ben

Have at look at THIS , but I wouldn't try to print it out!

Thats cool! I like how it tells you the location of almost every Satellite or Probe. I didnt know some Probes (Like the New Horizons Probe), are on their way to different parts of the Solar System.
