Narrow Gauge

Ok. I have been talking to my friends latley about trainz (with all the issues of the DLS and the support of TRS06 and TC going out) and we started talking about narrow gauge trainz on the DLS and other 3rd party sites. Now my friends are not narrow gauge (specifically 30ng and 24ng) friendly because of the fact that most of the stock is NOT ProtoLARS compatible and does not support any sort of load. Also, they said that most of the stock has no specific prototype (excluding the 24ng sstock. I corrected them and said that the SR&RL prototype was on Sirgibby's website.)

I created this thread to get the attrention of content creators and site owners to spread some narrow gauge 'love' around. The U.S. was almost run on narrow gauge trains and we need to pay tribute to that! Only the important ones have their own models (Prowler's D&RGW stock [By the way, great job with those Prowler]) so please help creat 30ng and 24 ng stock that is ProtoLARS supportable! A good starter (to me) is taking the SR&RL stock and editing it to carry loads. Please feel free to make other comments, but please try to keep them on the subject of 30ng and 24ng trainz.

Thank you for reading this.

Just about anything can be made to be industry interactive these days using PEVs Trainz utilities.

PEVs AttachmentMaker, for example, has enabled me to add/change tail lamps on all of my rolling stock, add/change visible loads, swap couplings and bogeys and even alter the loading gauge here and there. Not only is it satisfying to do it yourself in this way it is also quite good fun.

Also, it gives non-content creators like me something of an insight into the time and energy needed to create even the most basic item from scratch.

Not everything, it would seem, comes to he or she who waits and US rolling stock is already by far the dominant category on the DLS.

If they are referring to the content on Trainzone, all the narrow gauge content there is modelled on specific prototypes, nothing is made-up.

Regarding your proposed mods to the SR&RL stock. Change it as much as you wish but only for your own use, you can not distribute it in any way.

for 30ng... the 30ng.com website has lots of loadable train cars... whether there lars or not they are still compatible with lars

I'm aware of 30ng trainz. I love their stock but there is no specific prototype. Also, not every car is LARS supportable. I'm not sure how to mod the cars yet. In regards to Narrowgauge's reply, the "no specific prototype" part was directed towards the 30ng stock. The part about the LARS compatibility was directed all around the bush. Especially at the 24ng US rolling stock.

Thanks to you guys I have re-discovered Trainz via 30ng.com after months of sitting idle.

I downloaded numerous items and made a small donation via PayPal. Now to figure out how to replace most of my track to 30in. ;)

I love all the 30" & 24" NG locos and cars ... I have 36" (as most Pennsylvania NG were 36") ... and I layed BNSF50 Invisatrack right on top of my 36" track (slightly off center, to one side ... now I can run all NG equipment ... but it only looks good from the one side, or down low.

Even the little Murchison "Mouse" narrow-gauge diesel locomotive on TrainZone? :o  :p

Regards.

Yea, even that little mouse engine. What would be really cool is if Sirgibby could make all the SR&RL stock LARS compatible.

Yes, Mouse had a prototype but what it was is long gone from my memory.

Mike (Sirgibby) is not the one to ask about adding Lars capability to the SR&RL stock. Apart from the two Forney's and the snow plow, the rest are my models. I have no interest in adding Lars to the freight stock, you can do it for your own use with Pev's attachment maker.

I will promise you this, do a good job of it, add your name into the description giving yourself the credit for the update and I will replace the stock on Trainzone with your changed items.

Thanks, but I'm not sure which program to use or how to do it. I wish I could though. I wish I knew what programs I could use to make the 2-4-4T forneys too.

Fred

You can use Gmax, Blender or Max. Firts tow are free, Max is not.

I would strongly advise that which ever program you use, you make several buildings before you tackle a Forney. None of the programs I listed are easy and making a good looking steam loco is probably the most difficult of all.

The program you can use to add the attachments is 'Attachment Maker' by Pev. Search the forums for a link. For guidance, look at the configs of standard gauge models that are already set up for Lars. Work on a clone of an SR&RL wagon and if you foul up, nothing is lost. You will only learn by 'doing'.

Peter

While I find it difficult to use because the interface is different from Gmax, I would suggest you try Blender, it seems that an increasing number of people are using it but still few compared with Gmax or Max.

Ask your specific question in the Content creation forum, you are more likely to get more opinions.

Whatever you choose, be prepared to work at it and ask questions on that forum, not here.
