My Hard Drive and people who break content on purpose.

Purveyor of the Forgotten
I am going to say this one time, and one time only.

MY HARD DRIVE IS NOT YOUR BATTLEGROUND. PERIOD.

WHAT DELUSION OF GRANDEUR TOLD YOU THAT IT WAS OK TO TRASH FILES ON MY (NOT YOUR) HARD DRIVE?

YOU BASICALLY USED THE DLS AS A BOT NET TO HACK FILES ON OTHER PEOPLE'S COMPUTERS.

THIS WAS A STUPID MOVE. IT REFLECTS POORLY ON YOU AND THE ENTITIES YOU ARE ASSOCIATED WITH.

NOW YOUR CONTENT CAN NOT BE TRUSTED AS THE POSSIBILITY OF MORE DESTRUCTIVE ACTIONS MAY RESULT.

STOP DRAGGING THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY INTO IT.

STOP BREAKING FILES ON MY COMPUTER.

STOP IT.

I am now waiting to see what gets done about this. This is the second example of someone using the DLS to break assets.

If no action is taken, it would be the same as sanctioning it.

If you feel the same way, please just add your name or signature in the next message.

Just add the siggy, this thread will prolly get closed anyways, might as well not add any more reasons for it to get closed.

Pointless and senseless vandalism which only damages the community, or more to the point plain stupid.
Name them if you can.

Naming may help, but the 'vandalism' may be a by-product of the SP1-related uploads.

If you are concerned about it, check with Helpdesk first, and get them to post here.

Could still be related to the updates though. It's very unlikely that someone else could hack into his system and alter the content.

Would somebody kindly enlighten us all as to what this thread is all about please. Is something about to happen to everybody's hard drives?

It maybe that there is a sense of frustration by some content creators and they would like to remove content from the DLs following N3V's "clarification" that DLS content may be used as payware which is not what the content creators understood when it was uploaded. Some content may not have its textures correctly licensed for payware but N3V will only remove this content on application from the copyright holder as per US law as the DLS is located in the US. Some of my content is in this position so I suggest you may wish to delete now rather than have to find a replacement at a later date should the copyright holder request its removal.

Whatever it is, it's likely to hit N3V hard unless they can sort out whatever is causing the issues, as the main selling point for Trainz is the amount of free non-malicious content available.

Shane

EDIT: If malicious content is involved, N3V need to act quickly as well, especially as they could well be in trouble law-wise for allowing such content to be placed on the Download Station.

This is the second example of someone using the DLS to break assets.

The RRSignal issue has been well documented. I'm curious as to who else is uploading stuff that will break assets now. This is quite a disturbing trend, and honestly, if there is an issue where I need to archive stuff as CDPs, I'd like an opportunity to do so before something else gets broken.

This will get out of hand quite fast and can undermine the entire community if it isn't stopped.

Agreed. That's why I've edited my last post to include more information.

I've a mind to contact Helpdesk and get them to look into this urgently (if no-one objects to me doing this - I do not mind if someone does object)

so only SOME people are allowed to do what they want with their work?

i don't see how this will 'break' or 'trash' or 'hack' anything. nothing will be made unusable, only features that once existed will become obsolete. in addition the entire system is being opened up to the public so people like yourself can make use of the features in a fair way that coincides with the authors wishes (and be protected on the DLS - I THOUGHT THAT IS WHAT EVERYONE WANTED). as the author stated, he can no longer verify the integrity of those files since they exist there without his permission, therefore he is using new versions to disable them. they are his assets, and he can expand or remove their abilities as he sees fit.

i do not understand why some of you argue both sides of something. you say you want DLS assets that are not 3rd party controlled so they can be easily found and updated in case xyz.com decides to leave, then you complain when such assets are made available.

not to mention, if you don't want assets like that, then dont download them - simple!

N8Phu, I'm grateful for your efforts in updating older content, and I respect your opinion, but I must disagree with your position on lilb's content and would like to point out that this is NOT the same situation as RRSignal's.

RRSignal's beef is with N3V, and their DLS policies, where-as, lilb's beef is with a Payware Content provider using his Intellectual Property without permission, compensation, or credit. These are very different situations, and it does not seem fair to compare the two.

If I were lilb, I'd hire and attorney and be done with the foolishness. As for N3V's policies on Content uploaded to the DLS, well, let's just say, IF I every release any original content for Trainz (other than repaints of others' creations), it will be through my own venue, as I refuse to forfiet ANY of MY rights to MY Intellectual Property, without compensation.

I love Trainz, and N3V has been good to me as a "User", but it is a slippery slope that the Content Creators tread when utilizing the (arguably) best venue to distribute their Freeware content (the DLS), as Zec has publicly stated that you basically transfer all rights to any of your work to N3V by uploading it to the DLS, and that N3V may do as they wish with it, now, or at any time in the future, including, but not limited to, including it with future Payware (ie TS2013+). If my content were a selling point for their software, I'd want my share too. http://forums.auran.com/trainz/show...ignal-s-deleted-content&p=1128223#post1128223

All the above is my opinion, yours may differ, and that's OK.
