My first attempt at a repaint

BN1970

Trainz Plus Beta Tester
Well, having bought Trainz 2009 and liking what I saw so far, I just knew I'd have to try my hand at repainting an E8 into the old "Q" colors; too bad I can't get the bottom light to really lite up, it's beyond my capabilities, darn it. Here's a little screenie to show you how it came out:

You are off to a great start ! Looks good ! How are you doing the repaint ? In Paintshed, or another means ? I Need a tutor, or tutorial, on how to do the things you are doing.

Glad you think it turned out OK ;)

I pretty much used PaintShopPro to redo the TGA files....it was also my first attempt at using the 1024x1024 size textures in 2009, but it seemed to work all right (at least so far, as it is still a WIP :p )

I'm still noob at this for now, I was probably lucky I got this far :D

It looks good. I would say maybe darken the red just a bit. Other than that, Well Done!:D

@ cascaderailroad: If you don't have and don't want to buy Paintshop Pro, check out a the free program DXTBmp. That's what I use for reskinning and it works just fine.

Hi Chas,

As you make no mention concerning the ownership of the model, I ask the following:-

Is this built-in content?.
Who is the author of this content?
Do you have the approval & personal consent of the author to reskin their work?.
What is the original 'kuid' # of this model please??.
Are you aware that you must seek & GET the approval of the author of a model, before reskinning it?.

:o

Thats a little extreme don't you think? I mean really layoff! Who cares anyway they made for us to enjoy, do we always have do mention who made it, like some stinkin' Nascar driver mentionin' his stinkin' sponsor? Come on, If anyone was really concerned they would have called the police not you!

You haven't been around Trainz that long so I will explain something to you.

The main thing to consider when reskinning content then distributing it, is the fact you are using someone else's model to do so. It is absoluetly essential to seek permission before submitting any reskin to the DLS. This excludes Paintshed items, they don't require permission to upload.

Just making you aware illinoiscentral, it does seem a bit snobbish at first but you are infact re-distributing someone else's content.:)

Calm down a bit, he made no mention of uploading his reskin, and as far as I am aware you do not have to ask permission for personal use.

Cheers David

Hi David,

An interesting response from illinoiscentral, & in fact yourself.
Do you like shooting messengers?.

:)

Perhaps a more 'gentle' approach on my part could have been taken,
however I wanted to keep it concise & clear.
The questions I posed were just that. Not accusations.

:)

Hi Noel, perhaps the way you should of asked could of been along the lines of,
If you intend uploading this skin blah blah blah.

That way there would be no misunderstanding when you gave the 'message' and the messenger would be safe :hehe:

My post was not aimed at anyone, it was aimed at the presumption that he was going to upload it.

And to illinoiscentral, you need to lower your blood pressure a bit mate, that kind of over reaction is not needed around here.

Cheers David

Absolutely Amazing

OMG, some of you are so quick to jump on someone! :(

I was merely posting a screenshot of a repaint of mine, and NOWHERE was it said that I was uploading it! I guess I had better start wording my responses to the exact letter so no one gets confused. This model was not intended to be uploaded to the dls; if it was going to be uploaded, I would have stated so in my message. But I guess I left a gray area.

Now, to the nitty gritty.....this was MY personal repaint used on MY personal copy of Trainz, and I see no reason I can't repaint for MY personal pleasure; what, are you going to come over to my house and check my computer to see if I repainted one of your locos? Don't be silly. I have been repainting and reskinning for years in MSTS and KRS, so I am well aware of what is proper permissions before uploading; but for those who need to know...

The model is by Josh Harvey; it has apparently been reskinned many times, judging by the number of reskins available on the dls. I read the description, and nowhere does it mention I cannot reskin it for either PERSONAL USE or for UPLOADING. I depend on the author to either license his model, stating therein what his wishes are, or to put those wishes into the description. Both were checked BEFORE I repainted this model. And, as I would usually do, I would have tried to contact Josh before uploading, just as a courtesy to him.

It's just amazing that such a little thing as posting a screenie of some private work would cause such a ruckus. That being said, maybe it's just better to keep such work to one's self and avoid the confusion. :n: I'm not trying to be critical here, or start a flame war, but couldn't something like this have been handled by a PM to me? I would have been happy to have explained it to you.

Nice work Chaz. Although I have no intentions of getting 09, looks like you've got the idea!

-now to those about the permission. I HAVE been around for a LONG time, since 04 in fact, and to my understanding, you DO NOT need permission for a personal reskin, You only need it if you intend to release it. That being said, let's get on with the topic.

That is a beautiful reskin. If you ever do decide to release it, please let me know. I would love to have this on my railroad.

Chaz,

1 - Nice first attempt.
2 - The following is not an accusation, more an explanation of things not mentioned that should have been.
There are several reasons to email a creator about a reskin/mod of his/her content even if for personal use.
One example is if somehow your system get hacked (it happens these days) and the item acquired. There have been times where websites have popped up with the owner offering other people's content (original and modified) without the content owner's permission. These incidents have made creators desire more involvement to protect their work even if you do something like this for your own use. I know at least one creator that keeps a record of all reskins to his content even if for personal use.
Another is some if not all creators like to see what others can do such as reskins. The same way you get pride from what you have done, they get that feeling seeing efforts like yours but not if you don't show them a picture or even contact them. There's no other words I can describe this with but these, it is a bit selfish to have pride in what you have done but deny the creator the same feeling.
And some creators will offer assistance to folks with issues they are having or improving their skills. You mention the following:
too bad I can't get the bottom light to really lite up, it's beyond my capabilities, darn it.
Contacting the creator about this may get you assistance in accomplishing what you state you desire. So if you want this effect on the bottom light you mention, try contacting Josh Harvey about it. I don't think he frequents here much so posting here won't work.
