My 4 year desktop got new components : Z77P-D3 LGA1155

Well for those interested to read and comment, suggest, advice here is what I did the last 4 days!
On the opening day of our web-store my desktop warhorse machine died suddenly and after three weeks we discovered it was the motherboard became glitchie not fried.
So we go Bangkok and we checked the M board, sent back for repair and I decided to facelift the computer and buy a new board and processor as almost 4 years is time to change.
Here is the new baby monster Gigabyte Z77P-D3 and i7-3770K LGA 1155 and 1 block of 8GB ram. WIN 8 pro x64 replacing WIN7 x64.:Y:
Honest I did not know yet the impact of this replacement till I get back to my hotel room and started playing with WIN 8 and yes my routes on the new board and ram.
I am still in shock. I thought before my ASUS top of the line was a fast one but forgot almost 3 year old.
Now everything, everything is more than running smooth.
WIN 8 why are people so itchy about it??? It works wonderful and yes new stuff new ideas just play with it and it's a marvel if you ask me.
It took me less than 20 minutes to get the hang of it and for sure will find more tweaking and tuning as we go with the flow.
SO if I can already advice ANYONE look at this M board it does wonders.
Now for those already having this or are really HW techs n experts I need some advice not just talk:
I am not into overclocking manually and e the ET6 easy tune 6 is a manual OC which is to risky for me when 800 km from the next real hw shop.
Roy's Trainz routes run very, very well on the standard settings 3.5, 3.9 GHZ but i not want to make crucial mistakes without experience frying my board.
The Thai expert told me they could OC to 5.9GHZ but do not run all day just a few hours but that is asking for trouble.
SO I sincerely hope one or more out there have a lot of experience with OC maybe on this board too.
Really hope one can help me with good guidance.
thanks in advance

Most happy Ed to see you plan the same, Really I am stunned by the improvement absolutely dramatic compared to my Asus Rampage III but hey 3 years almost 4 is a lot of time for improvement and it feels for me like Xmas! Ed what is wrong with the forum?? I had before the crash always trouble posting screenies that I could not put the url and than it froze. Now I can but the enter or return button when I want to go to the next line not work any more very frustrating..... See now I want to hit return but the editor writes every thing in one long line... what can I do?? I hope someone also read this who is responsible and very good at OC with this toy coz I not have the experience and expertise and not want to do any manual OC only if I can choose level 1, level 2 or level 3 like with Asu s. Does anyone know if this exist?? thanks for any help to get even faster..... ED I run now at draw 10km phenomal views and no real loss of fps or not at all is that something??!!! regards Roy

Did pretty much the same back in October, same processor but an Asus motherboard, not bothered overclocking or even thinking about it as it's just about perfect for Trainz. Stuck to Win7 though, having tried the preview there is nothing on Win8's metro that I am ever remotely likely to use. Win8 or whatever follows will come when there isn't any other option.

That processor and I'm using it with my GTX460 is phenomenal as it is.

Good luck with your new PC. A 4 year old PC is like a generation ago, things change so rapidly. As far as Windows 8 goes, the consensus of opinion of most of the tech shows on TV and the internet, is that it is not ready for prime time. They discussed it at length on one 2 hour show I listened to this past weekend, and one person remarked that it is a smart phone operating system reworked to run a desktop. He thinks it will be like the original issue of Windows Vista, full of problems until the second generation or it is replaced with Windows Blue which is the next OS that is in the works now. The speed you are getting is not from Windows 8, since bench mark test for gaming apps have shown no advantage to Windows 8, About the only advantage they could see is that it works well with a touch screen. http://www.itworld.com/software/224533/windows-8-10-biggest-problems-so-far

Congratulations on the new baby, Roy! :)

A 3 or 4 year old machine is like a grand dad.

I did the same about 3 months ago. I am very pleased with my build. Your new system is similar, execpt I put in 16GB right away.

I agree Windows 8 isn't that bad. I did install the Win8 start menu. You can get it here:

http://www.classicstart8.com/

This will give you the badly needed start menu when in desktop.

The freezing in IE10. I've had that too. Have you tried the desktop version of IE versus the one that works in the tiled view? There's a difference in the browsers. The Desktop version is the 32-bit version and is more compatible. The Tiled is 64-bit so this might be the issue. You can also try compatibility view. This seems to help a lot.

Good luck, and always have fun! :D

I updated last week and FPS went from 22fps to 32fps, then OC to 42fps, OC from stock 3.40GHz to 4.20GHz at max temp. of 63C.

Morning Bob,thanks for the detailed post! most appreciated and yes probably the speed is not from Win 8 but overall it feels like driving a Ferrari but sitting in a Mac truck right? Maybe this bug here when typing I cannot use the return button is a win * bug? a setting no clue yet other things to do first. Roy

Morning John, thanks for the very nice post! John did you or do you have same problem the return/enter button not works when typing here so all in one endless row???? Also when using my new installed fraps F12 screenie upload it to picasa and save the url location for posting on the forum not works anymore same way or not. Have to use snip it now but cannot yet enlarge the size of the pict, same for picasa... so some homework to do. This hw is wow to good to be true honest and I cannot imagine what speed you have with your GTX 680 where mine is the "old" GTX 580, can you give some insides on the 680?? Next year probably I might upgrade that one too and put this one in my second backup desktop in case on computer fries. The ie puzzles me but I will find out eventually. See you are doing well and very busy, very good my friend! Ning says hello too!! regards Roy n Ning ugly the editor not been able to move in allineas?!! ouch

Whitepass can you tell me what buttons you hit in OC as I never did this before only used preset OC settings in a 1,2,3 fashion kind of safety buckle up thing. thanks Roy

What i thought IE is buggy,
I updated Firefox and guess what in her can use all the buttons incl enter/return.

Hi Roy,

Give my big hugs to Ning. I'm doing okay, yes... Mentally better, staying busy, and sleeping a lot which really helps. I go to physio therapy 2 times a week for the next couple of months. This gets me out of the house, and I go into my workplace and visit with my coworkers and sometimes have lunch. That's tough mentally and depressing, but I'm getting used to it. My users keep asking for me because they miss me. When are you coming back, hope you're feeling better, etc. It's nice to be wanted. :) Sadly, I don't think I'll be going back. I have some executive function issues, which is part of the course. I can no longer multi-task and I'm slowing down. My brain is going from an i7-3770 running at 3.8 GHz to a Z-80-2 running at 1.2 Mhz! This is the tough part because I have to think about everything I do, including walking, going to the...., etc. It's different; all different now.

Anyway yes. The enter key did just that with the forums. I put the Auran website into compatibility mode, which I think brings it down to IE9 levels. It works fine that way. This is in the desktop version. I think I forgot to mention this in my previous post because I was posting and forgot I had an appointment.

IE still gets weird though with other websites, so I too will run Firefox for those, and jump back and forth. It's great having two browsers on the system, especially when downloading DEMS from the National Map sever. I can browse my emails in one browser, because the servers sends the download links to my email, and the other browser will have the downloads available.

The GTX680 is a very nice, and very fast video card. Trainz runs very smoothly with almost no stutters even in the built up sections on my route. The 580 isn't so fluffy either, and compares well. I figured if I was going to build a new system, I would go with the latest video card I could afford. The 690 was out of my budget, and not worth it because it's built as an SLI card, and would be a waste for me. I could get the same performance for less money if I got another 680 and SLI'd them together should I ever want to do that later.

I just today upgraded my DSL with my ISP from 1.5 Mbs to 6 Mbs. Cost me $10 more a month. Would have done this years ago, if I knew it was possible. Now the websites and video streaming are fantastic. !!!! Nothing like speed. My favorite browser for speed and lack of problems is Google Chrome. I have friends that work at MS , and that is what they use.

i just cleaned up all IE related stuff and good old faithful Firefox and all is working normal again and yes the old win7 start in there too for easy fall back to old habits but go forward for sure.
John you do very well! Just remember what is between the ears controls the body so never again talk about you think your GHZ dropped no that is a feature where you can let's call it hibernate and let the brain rest you know what I mean!;)
Keep your mind fresh and do lots of easy things and avoid stress and yes i can imagine meeting people from work is not easy at all.
I have very good memories on things i did in the 80ies. The early 80ies when Computervision out of Bedford, MA they worked with me, I was there exclusive partner that time for AEC apps (developer) on mainframes and as such more time over there or traveling to showcase our software to the multinationals and as such very fast access worldwide to a great network of potential customers than and later for my workstation and pc solutions.
Boston,Quincy market and the pier, loved to hang out for the weekend or go whale watching etc. Nice area to stay and good seasons weather wise.
The 690 sli is way overpriced and i wait for the next generation and or 680 to see if it is much faster better, less power consumption/heat to the 580 which runs very well though.

Ok to end a big virtual hug from both of us and also from Djoetje who is home alone and the King of the house where Aunti takes care him with lots of good veggies every day and a fresh cut banana tree to play with good for the antlers (one left coz season change).
Tomorrow back home already one week gone, time flies.

John you know somebody expert in OC setup of 1,2,3 presets for the Z77xxxxxxx?
most appreciated, thank you.

I did the overclock in the Bios using CPU Level UP on Asus Maximus V gene board, I used the lowest one of 4.20.

Hi Roy,

I'm doing okay. As you say here, little stress and eating well helps. With the PT, it gets me out of the house and into some fresh air. I go tomorrow for some PT and have lunch with a friend in Woburn. He used to work with me for many years, and we still keep in touch. If I'm not resting, I'm doing some on-the-side consulting and helping out. This keeps me pretty occupied most of the time. It's a small world. My neighbor used to work for Computervision in the early 1980s. Bob Fogg lived around the corner from me, and we'd talk computer stuff much later after he retired. He was an electrical engineer with them. Much later, after Computervision merged with Prime Computer (I think), Polaroid moved into that location. Much, much later, while I was with Polaroid, my division moved the Crosby Drive. Today, I work for Oracle, which is in Burlington, MA near the Lahey Clinic. I agree we've got some nice places to visit and places to eat at. I used to go into Boston often and visit Quincy Market and that area. I remember AEC Apps. They're still around making heating and cooling apps for building maintenance. While you were partnering with Computervision, I was a hardware technician with Visual Technology where I worked on terminals and peripherals.

I agree the 690 is way too overpriced. That's why I didn't go with it. The 680 actually runs pretty cool. My rig isn't overclocked and my EVGA GTX680 runs at 37C on idle. When running Trainz, the video card goes up in the mid 40s. Funny you should mention the O.C. on the motherboards. I was looking at that myself, and then backed away. I'm not too sure I want to do that yet. My board is still too new, and my engineering self says no. Don't do that! Sorry I can't help you with this.

John

John,

what a small world right beautiful and we without knowing moving around in the same region and now meet after so many years.
When we started working porting to workstations we moved all energy to Silicon Valley and became close partner with Silicon Graphics and selling there WS with our apps to governments and multinationals over EU most in Germany. So from MA to CA, but San Fran was a real nice city, the bay area and my favorite Italian restaurant downtown Culetos....What can I say time goes so fast but memories last.
I still remember when I created the first 3D trees and seasonal and got the attention from the local Boston ABC or xxx tv crew for a tv special at Computervison showing my stuff.
All I did was using the layering system creating 3D illusions for 4 seasons with flat shading but hey that was high tech and looked great at that time not to compare to today but that was 32 years ago....who in Trainz can claim that guiness book of records??? no one I bet :hehe:.
BTW OC I AM not into it unless it has presettings from the seller like ASUS otherwise I not touch it as the standard settings already do very well and toasters we not need here in Thailand haha.
You stay active, enjoy, rest when needed get most fresh air and winter time outdoor activities you will feel reborn!
So happy to hear you sound things pretty much under control and happy.

have a great weekend,

Roy n Ning
