multiple video cards

Except I have the "buy a new computer itch" something terrible.:hehe:

That crazy looking thing just intrigues be me to no end.

I suppose I could but that won't scratch my buy-a-new-computer itch. I can wait plus I'll be off line for a month or more starting in about 2 weeks for the move from Florida to Tennessee (ugh). I imagine by the time I really get set up and settled in it will be fairly close to Christmas.

Just a quick note to reiterate the PCIe SSD idea again if you're trying to achieve the ultimate in present state-of-the-art desktop performance.
SSD drives from Intel, Samsung, Kingston, etc., using the relatively new PCIe NVMe protocol/ interface are coming out offering insane read/write performance that should deal to the worst stutters that T:ANE can throw at them in its current state of development. :-)
Some of these drives are quite affordable too and definitely on my current upgrade wishlist.

All an SSD does is allow assets to be accessed more quickly. TANE prefetches assets so an SSD has less effect than TS12. In TS12 it possibly improves frame rates by roughly 3% what it does do is allow scenery objects to appear more quickly.

A GTX980 or better would have more impact.

Using SSD's isn't an answer to increasing framerate. What it does it is alleviate lock ups and micro stuttering that occur when moving around a route as assets load in. TS12 runs quite poorly for me when on a WD Black 2TB, however when on an SSD, my experience improves significantly, not because my framerate is higher, but because I don't experience any lockups from loading assets.

All other factors being equal - an SSD does make a measurable impact on the performance of both T:ANE and TS12 by speeding up most file I/O ops and asset retrieval.
It really speeds up database operations in TS12 particularly. (T:ANE database repairs are by design much more efficient than TS12's, so the difference in performance is less noticeable there.)

This conversation thread was predominantly about Ben's quest to build a no-expense-spared, multi-GPU, no-compromise machine that would storm anything that T:ANE could throw at it.
My comments were proffered in that vein.

A day or two ago the Alienware site changed drastically. Prior to this you could click on options and see what they were including prices. Today half the stuff you would definitely want to look at as options are listed as "configure later". Hopefully they are updating the site to included some of the latest-n-greatest that have been mentioned above.

Ben

PS: if you want a real exercise in frustration try getting a price list for McIntosh stereo equipment.:hehe:

1. The video cards are bridged together so they work together in tandem, giving them more memory and a faster speed more or less. It's not double the speed but faster overall. There are two similar, but slightly different technologies from the two big players. ATI has their Crossfire, while NVidia has their SLI.

Theoretically speaking, it could be double or triple the speed, but due to some scaling and buss bandwidth issues, it works out to be 1/3 faster instead of 100% faster for two cards, with three cards being that much again more. There are other issues as well due to crosstalk noise, which causes what is known as micro-stutters. This can be seen as very slight pauses in what would be otherwise a smooth video output. There are ways around it to make this less noticeable, such as adjusting frame rate limiters, and V-sync, but it isn't perfect. Some people find that 3-cards is better at this than 2-cards. This is probably due to the harmonics.

2. Not at the present time, though it's been mentioned again as a someday thing. I actually brought this up during the early Kick Starter days, and there was quite a bit of interest in it. N3V has sort of ignored the issue, but someone brought it up again in the new Trainz Support blog-thing, and the answer is it's in the cards for the future in so many words.

Do I have this? Nope. I can't afford a 2nd video card.

N3V Raised money in Kickstarter Pledging, SLI / Crossfire would be in Tane? we were told, Read the thread yourself,Here is the link

Here's 'Admin's' answer to the question "Will T:ANE support AMD Crossfire in future?" asked a few days ago in the new Q&A section.

"Short answer = Yes

Longer answer = we're not sure of the exact time this feature will be included in the release build."

Probability is that SLI support will be forthcoming too. (Just don't hold your breath while you're waiting.)
N3V are understandably pouring most of their effort into ensuring T:ANE runs well on single GPUs first!

I agree. Let's get things working the right way first then add the bells, whistles, and headlights afterwards. :)

Like all things Auran/N3V it happens Soon(tm).
