MSTS To Trainz

Hi everyone I was wondering about this for a long while how do you import MSTS Trains to Trainz if there is a thread about this already can someone send it to me because I can't find it please and thank you

It is possible.

It also takes a lot of time and energy, a lot of expensive software, and is probably not legal.

Don't bother.

Oh yeah... Thats really good... Make a lot of assumptions when, going by you 'probably' and the 'expensive software', you don't know what your talking about. Now, you may know, but those lines say to me you don't.

Yes, it's possible. It does vary depending on what program the original creator used to make the MSTS content. If it was made with 3D Canvas pro, GMax, or 3DSMax, you can ask the original creator for a .3ds version of the model, or the source gmax file (if it was made in GMax).

If it was made using Train Sim Modeller, then it is a grey area. If you have 3D Canvas Pro, you can convert the source .tsm file over to that I believe, which is perfectly find since you need to ask the creator for the source file. If you have GMax (or 3DSMax or blender) you will have to use a program called 'shapeconverter'. Not sure of the link (I've lost the link, and it didn't come with a link) though. This program is the grey area one. It uses the end exported model (.s file), and converts it to a .3ds file. This program should only ever be used if you have permission from the original creator. I've made a number of conversions using this method, and it requires a LOT of work to reapply all the textures (less work than starting from scratch though). It also works on the honesty system. Namely you should only ever use it honestly... As I said, grey area... So far, I've not seen any problems come from this program in the MSTS/TRS communities I'm with. But, to be able to do this, you need to have a fair bit of experience with your 3D program, otherwise you'll be stuck.

And no, it doesn't require any expensive software as such. You can always use the expensive software if you want... But you don't need it.

And, as above, one of the methods is in a grey area, but when used responcibly it isn't illegal. And thats only one of the methods, for one program. All of the others require you to contact the author to do anything at all, which means it can't be illegal, except in certain situations (such as the person your asking not being allowed to give it out, or if they've gotten it illegally).

You dont have a true when you write, that you have to do LOT of work to reapply all the textures. This is the work for few minutes, I know it, because I converted some models. A lot more the work is recreating the bogeys, every animation, pants, in case of personal wagon placing the points for the passengers etc. But importing the 3ds file into GMAX/3D, recreating the textures and the necessary points and exporting the file to IM is the work for the 1/2 hour. Without the bogey as extra IM, without the animation, without the working pant, without the loading any, without the sound and the enginespec, when you converting a loco. But you can use in-built sound, the lot of enginespec exists - you can use them -> and you can ride the model in the TRS.

Just checking - am I correct in thinking that it is impossible to import MSTS layouts and activities into Trainz?

Pretty much... Well, directly anyway. Indirectly (aka, rebuild from scratch to make it look as close as possible), well thats entirely possible. I know that Philskene has done it :)

I've done several routes using the MSTS layout as a model.....

Have you uploaded those anywhere? That method sounds interesting...
No...I haven't uploaded any of my routes...mainly because of the amount of payware I use in them...:p

If a person knows how to create activities in MSTS, you can get a schematic of the route with all the signals and junctions marked....plus the mileage....I usually print that out. There are usually maps available on MSTS routes, so I use them as a reference too.....then I usually hop in the cab and drive the route, noting scenery, towns and such. I don't try to duplicate the scenery exactly....I just use what's availiable from Trainz creators. One of the easier ones, because of the diagrams available and uncomplicated layout, was the Full Bucket Line....

I see. It's something I thought about doing once or twice, that's why I asked. Have you ever aquired any MSTS payware? I was wondering at the quality of those releases.

Yes, I've purchased some routes...mostly because it was required for a Virtual Railroad I'm part of. The ones I have purchased are well done, but I've downloaded freebies just as good. I've also purchased locos which I thought were well done too....

Hello Bri...

 What content do you wish to have converted?

The content created for msts as well as Auran Trainz is created straight-forward as one project...

The processes listed above are complicated enough & the assumption of co-operation between Content Creators to release their content to another game altogether(even if they use both simulators) could be another let-down not needed.

The creation of a mesh is easy in gmax. Animation, texture mapping, exporting, etc is the challenge.

Why not join the thousands of Auran Trainz Content Creators & start from scratch to build your needed content, at least until someone creates it?

Focusing on one object that you don't presently have can drive you crazy until you remember you have tons of stuff you like anyway...

Trainzers look around at the current list of assets & see if something is missing...eventually it will be made...:D

Well, we have come quite a long way since 2004. Many engines I liked on MSTS have came onto Trainz as well. Still, there are some that I'd really like to see in Trainz.
