Mountain railway

Nothing snowdon specific so far, but...

Saw your post and like to be helpful where I can. I've not found anything Snowdon Railway specific, but have seen some great content at http://www.trainzone.co.nz/ffestiniog.htm. It's for the Ffestiniog railway, also in Wales, and perhaps some thing there could help substitute until something comes up for you. Typing "rack and pinion" on a DLS search came up with some wonderful looking 800mm track, so I'm sure typing "800mm" would bring up some goodies as far as rolling stock substitutes. It's a little time consuming, but pretty much any decent mountainous layout could be easily tweaked into being a good Snowdonia route. GAURC has some great blank terrains which could be used if you wanted to start a layout from scratch. Sorry I can't find exatly what you're looking for, but I hope this helps if only a little.

Peace,

Actually you helped me quite a bit. I was actually about to ask wetter was a blank terrian set up. What is gaurc? And as for the ffestinoig rs I have almost all of their content and I do have the track. Is there buffers though that would be a major help?

GAURC - The Great American Underground Railroad Company. The site was a godsend to me in getting blank terrain maps. The good part is that they're ready to go after downloading, with one proviso:

If you need to set up your route with a specific region in Surveyor, create a blank one-tile map with your preferred region setting and save it; then open it up in content manager for editing, move the terrain file ("name".gnd) from the downloaded map into it (and be sure to make sure it has the same "name" as the one you're replacing). After that you're good to go and the new terrain will have the right region setting.

The link for GAURC is http://www.gaurc.us/?page_id=160, and the terrains are thanks to a great guy with the username fishlipsatwork:Y: , some of his stuff is on the DLC. I'm working on a route based on the old Bermuda Railway and his work really helped it along, and helped with my understanding of getting DEM terrains into Trainz, and how to do my own.

Buffers, there are tons on the DLC under the Trackside Accessories section, I've no idea what the Snowdon Railway would have used, but I'm sure there's something suitable out there. There's also very likely to be scenery accessories on one of the sites listed at http://www.railserve.com/Computers/Trainz/. The eastern European sites in particular hide some gems.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to ask, either myself or one of the brilliant and much-more-experienced fellows in these forums will give you a hand.

Peace.

Buffers - not yet as I haven't uploaded any of my stuff for my Ffestiniog Welsh Highland project as it's not finished yet but their will be assorted FR and WHR buffers plus track, bridges embankments plus a load of other related stuff on the DLS at some point in the future. The intention is to release it all at the same time.

Oddly enough the dem I made for the project does include Snowdon, unfortunately not enough to cover the whole of the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which I probably could have included as it is visible from the Welsh Highland, never occurred to me at the time though.

You might want to have a look here for updates http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=56167&highlight=ffestinioghttp://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=56167&page=2&highlight=ffestiniog

Well I know that but I just got 09 and I'm happy with it. I don't want to waste money. Any BOT; I can just download the terrains and not the textures right? They are not essential are they?

With Fishlipsatwork DEM's you need at least 5 HOG Texture colors to show where the roads rivers and tracks should go ... without them you will not be able to see where you want to place tracks.

I got rid of the blinding Aqua HOG tile, and replaced it with a Greyish Hog Tile that I switched the names on it ... more pleasing to the eye, and less eyestrain.

Hey feller,
If you're referring to HOG/TIGER line textures from the GAURC site I'm not 100% certain either way. They're probably necessary, but you can always try to get a terrain loaded up and download them later on if needed. I used them because the textures can be very helpful if making your own terrains from Digital Elevation Maps.

Well using really need the textures as I'm doing a UK route.... I just need something to get me started on a mountain railway.

In that case, do a DLS search for the username fishlipsatwork and download one of the four islands he kindly uploaded an age ago... they're mountainous, don't have water or anything added, and can very easily be worked on in Surveyor to make wonderful mountain railways. They're where I very first started off making routes. The flat areas around the islands at 0 meters are a great base for making gently rolling countryside around the mountain and run for two-or-three terrain tiles around it, giving plenty of room for the railway's 'base camp' station and surrounding villages.

Best of luck with it, would be interested to hear how it all goes.

just so you know I pit this together in an hour so it doesn't look that good. This is a WiP

There's a saying I like to remind myself while I'm building my Rhum Islands Railway... all good things come to those who wait. Looking good so far feller - hope it goes well, and that you enjoy the process as much as I do.

I have a huge update. I will post pics when I can. I am at a loss as to what to do with the line next. How do I post attachments. I want to send a cdp to master route makers.
