Model Train Question: Return Crank

Hi everyone,

Recently my Dad purchased me a Hornby Flying Scotsman train set. This has the loco, tender, 3 coaches, an oval of track, a siding with buffer and a controller.

I've noticed that the return crank on the locomotive (No.4472 herself) is incorrectly placed ahead of the rest of the motion when it should trail.

Can anyone guide me with putting it in the correct location? I've read that the real locos of the A1/A3 class had Gresley Conjugated valve gear and that the return crank is 120 degrees behind the driving rod.

Any help is appreciated, and I hope this is in the right section.

Kieran.

P.S. Going to have to rethink the plan of my existing layout. I was going to set it in the 1960's. I might have to set it in the 1940's so I can switch between LMS and LNER as my plan was to run LMS trains in BR livery, but Dad destroyed those plans.

Hi Kieran - I have no experience with Hornby but have had some experience with 1950's/60's Tri-ang locos so following may be totally irrelevant (but it's the thought that counts ......... right?).

On Tri-ang locos, the coupling rods/drive gearing all pivoted on bars (which were part of the driving wheels) that had flattened sections on opposite sides. The connecting rods etc were anchored to these bars by tiny screws. If you undo the screw (remove it completely), the coupling (or whatever) should pull right off the bar. You could then rotate the wheels 180 degrees and slide everything back on. Note that the connecting rods etc had a straight section within the hole which had to mate with the flat spots on the bar. i.e. 180 degree movement was your only choice.

Not sure how much sense that makes to you .......... but it was a long time ago when I was playing with models. I now much prefer Trainz!!!!

Regards. Colin.
