Missing assets

Is there a "best approach" to finding missing assets?

I have spent so long searching unsuccessfully with various routes and am rapidly coming to the conclusion that it's not worth touching anything on the download station.

Is the recipe just google+patience?

There is a thread for posting missing assets, and sometimes people can help you to find them. It is a bit hit or miss though:
