Maybe you recognized the construction of many of my last privys, The actual toilets are always at the first floor. Why was that?
At the end of the 19th century not all places have been connected to a canalisation. So at the basement there have been barrels or coaches to collect
the faeces. Do not forget, those have been raw materials at that time, used for gunpowder production or fertiliser.

Yes, right! Those stones served exactly this purpose. Sometimes pitch was applied to prevent crawling insects to reach the crops.
