main cargos?

well i know that :) but ive seen pics and videos of certain class 1 with their own freight train bnsf ive seen with manly containers trains and norfolk southern with coal or trash cars

The point being that you can't say there's one specific thing that pays the bills for most railroads. Certain ones here and there, yes, but nothing as big as the examples you've given.

You would have to find an annual report for those particular railroads to find out the percentages of commodities that were hauled.

Example from UP 2007 Annual Report.

Energy (coal,oil) 20%
Industrial Products 20%
Chemicals 15%
Automobiles 9%
Agricultural 17%
Intermodal 19%

While the ATSF wanted to be an 80% intermodal railroad; at best it achieved 40-50%. Remember that the traffic and sales department is all about selling coal, grain and boxcar service much to the dismay of the VP that has declared "The boxcar business is dead."

Even today, double stack trains still top at 20% (nation wide US) despite years of continual projections in the range of 70-80%.
