Looking for Advice Creating a World War II (Europe) Layout

The idea has been rattling around my head to create a scenario set in Europe during World War II. You're the driver of an American Army train and have to get troops, supplies, etc. from a make-shift port to the front line. The route would go through a war-ravaged landscape. I've done some preliminary searches for ruins, debris, etc. as well as US Army assets from the period. I also found an "Explosions Field" asset I'm downloading.

In any case, I'm curious if anyone out there has done this sort of thing and could recommend period-correct assets?

Thanks!

Sounds like a neat project. If you search for "B-17" or "B-24" in the content manager, you'll see some nice airplanes made by "whecsailor". He also has some earlier period autos, planes, ships, etc. You might find something of interest there.

Thanks guys. I need to do some more research into what the sorts of scenes I'd like to recreate actually looked like. I'm thinking this will be fictitious, but with reasonably realistic and historically accurate objects. Right now it's just a rough idea, but these suggestions mean I should be able to find appropriate assets. Thanks again!!

If you haven’t done so already, try DLS Title searches for derelict, ticking all the version boxes.

You’ll find buildings, and many other assets, which look very much like war damaged items.

The stuff from domsarto and Dinorius_Redundicus are particularly good.

A book has been published covering the exploits of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps (Railroad Units) in both North Africa and Europe. I think I have a copy someplace. If I can determine the exact title and author I will post it here. It is loaded with original photos and maps that would be invaluable for your project. Good Luck.

Yes, I have already noticed the "derelict" and "abandoned" search terms come up with some good stuff. Thanks mezzoprezzo!

If you can find the title of that book, tomurban, I would be obliged.

FOUND IT! hiding under the sofa. The full title is: "United States MILITARY RAILWAY SERVICE America's Soldier-Railroaders in WW11" by Don DeNevi and Bob Hall. The front cover "jacket" is red/black with Gold Lettering and the rear cover "jacket" contains 6 wartime photos. The book contains 160 pages of which I would guess 75% are good quality b/w wartime photographs. At the end of the book you will find a Bibliography of sources that should invaluable in your project. I can't tell you how much it cost because I received it as a Christmas present in 2009. Good luck with your project and please keep us posted on you progress. By the way, the narrative contained in the book should provide some excellent ideas for working sessions.

Forgot to mention that the bottom of the rear jacket also states "A Boston Mills Press Book"

Found a copy on ebay for you @ $5. http://www.ebay.com/itm/United-Stat...848?pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item416dfe3e30

Hope you have a paypal account.

Thank you so much tomurban!! I just confirmed that my local library has a copy, which surprised me. I look forward to some inspiration! I've also been looking at beachhead images. I wan to have a makeshift port with some improvised tracks leading to a mainline and then off through the countryside!

Thanks again!

Glad that your local library has a copy for you to review, but be sure to get the ebay copy if you can. For $5 you can have a personal copy of your own for that war time inspiration.
