Locations of Files from CM

To save my life, I cannot find where content manager saves the files it downloads. I'm sure someone knows! I would really appreciate a reply!

I see you have TS2009, so both it and TRS2006 save the downloaded assets into the 'local' folder in the respective installations. The asset files are stored in a sub folder (one for each asset) whose name is encoded by Content Manager.

You should never need to access these asset in the local folder directly. And you are risking a problem if you do..

When you open an asset for editing it is decoded and copied to the 'editing' folder in a new sub folder whose name is generally the asset's name.

Actually I'm trying to copy the data from my old to new computer. Which for some reason on my new one content manager seems to say "busy server" 100% of the time.

If you open your C: "Program Files" folder, you will find the Auran folder near the top of the list. Now open the Auran folder and look for the "Local" folder. If your two computers are networked, you can transfer the local folder using the "send to" option. If not, you will need a large enough temporary storage device to transfer the folder contents. If your "Local" is very large (in megabytes) this may not be doable.

Actually my "local" folder is only 353 kb but there are files named "assets", "base", and "data" which are larger

Is it possible that these are the ones?

If you right-click on your Local folder, Windows will tell you how big it and all subfolders are. If you have downloaded a lot on content, your folder is likley to have breached the gigabyte threshold, not just megabytes. As tomurban said, you would probably need something like a removable hard drive to transfer this much info from PC1 to PC2.

Then you would need to open buggy, underpowered CMP and choose Import Content under the File menu. With luck, it will get most of your assets without freezing up three or four times. Then you get to spend the better part of a week downloading all of the missing dependencies that you already had but CMP failed to import (can you tell I speak from bitter experience? :( )

To clarify this for you, anything downloaded from the DLS or imported from some other source will be located in your "LOCAL" folder. The other folders are used by TRAINZ for built in items and functions. To "see" its contents in CMP go to the search function. Under the menu go to location and select local. Every item it contains will be displayed in the main window.

Found the file

I did manage to find the "local" file on PC1, but as you said it is about 8GB so I will have to find a external harddrive

Could you not just put the hard drive in the new comp.
If you haven't got room for it permenantly you can use Administrative tools in the control panel to transfer the folder/s you need then take it out.
To all doubters it does work.

External HD may be the way to go. I have a small USB one (250 GB) and I installed TRAINZ 09 on it and not much else. Move your existing "Local Folder" to it (it will replace the empty one) and you are good to go. Then it doesn't matter how much you download or what computer you are using. Just take the portable HD with you and plug it in to a USB port. They are quite small and very reliable. My 1.5 year old Toshiba was top rated at the time and is about the size of a pack of king size cigarettes. Just don't drop it.

Good Luck, tomurban
