I am left to wonder how many other public transit groups are in similar straits.

Same old, same old, unfortunately. Not just with transit agencies, but with so many public agencies.

I see today we have it worst. From another article:

The MTA is the nation's fifth-largest municipal debtor behind the states of California, New York, Massachusetts and New York City, and it is projected to owe about $40 billion by 2019, only if interest rates stay where they are.
