Layout Bashing or how to get more enjoyment out of Trianz Model Railroad....

Tiny spaces, I mentioned prior in this thread about how you can maximize the most out of small areas...for example below is an open area near the lumber yard and truck service facility:

Below: I decided a waste dumpster delivery/removal facility would fit quite nicely here:

Details Added: Rusted barrels, dirty and new dumpsters, workers, fence with No Trespassing signs posted around the perimeter, weeds, height adjusted dumpsters on flatbed thanx to MeowRailroad's tip,
parking spaces with bumper etc......

And finally, seen these mini lifts on the back end of several flatbeds for unloading their products:

May have to start learning how to reskin models to get that nice beat up weathered look like the truck has.......

Been working on the J&D Manufacturing building with the for sale sign, converting it over to a produce warehouse. The following pictures show one of the loading areas now detailed. I especially like having the rail
worker standing on the BNSF switcher after delivering some produce...

Work in progress...will be adding more to the industry...

Below: A few posts or so ago I had a downed tree over some tracks caused by storm damage with a Mow crew working on its removal....I have been trying to figure out what to use the below area for:

So I decided to have that storm system also cause some damage for the Public Works department........

I think the scene came out pretty well............fallen trees and close utility lines are not a good thing...some OT might be in store for the Public Works road crew...

I don't know where you find all the Detail stuff, but it looks great.........Gives me a lot of ideas for different areas......

The best suggestion I can give is to set aside some time and have a notepad and pen handy. Open surveyor in Trainz and start at the top and work your way down to the bottom. Write the name down of the items that interests you and a brief description if needed (especially if the asset is in another language)...I wish I had done this prior because you come across a lot of items and you think you won't forget them but you will if you have many....then when you need that specific item you
can enter it in the search bar to locate it or scroll down to it. Hope that helps you out.

(Also anytime you add a new route or layout you will want to repeat these steps since new material will be added)

Another suggestion would be to create a spreadsheet where you can place kuids and descriptions. You can separate the kuids into various kinds of scenery by tabs (worksheets) so that all signs are on one worksheet, buildings on another, vehicles on another, and so forth. Creating a column with single word category descriptions will help you sort quickly to access just "stores" or "homes," for instance.

The great thing about a spreadsheet is that you can copy and paste your kuid in and out of Surveyor quickly and conveniently. LibreOffice provides a great spreadsheet for an unbeatable price (free), if you don't have Microsoft Office or similar...

since tmr 17 has no picklist, i do as follows:
- go to contentmanager
- go to filter: custom
- select category
- choose which category you prefer
- double click item and see asset-details
- select item(s) you want
- click in tab edit: copy
- paste copied items in spreadsheet
..........

you also can make screendumps of the asset-details as above..... lot of work, but so easy.....
and when there is a new installation: filter today and you have only the assets from that day......

have fun

Below: I had been wanting to add some mobile homes to the layout and used the space between the large Purina grain elevator and the 4 small grain silos in 1 corner of the Brazemore Yard layout:

Below: So I added these into the backdrop to give the appearance of some distance:

Above: I then added some details, a girl standing on the porch, parked car, trash cans and a hose, flowers and a swing set

Below: Minor scene.....just wanted to make this area a little more worked......

Above & below: Just added some hay bale, a JD Tractor with Baler attachment and a farmer....

Scenes that take up small spaces and require very little extra work.

Below: Updated Scene....found this "skip" dumpster used for hauling off debris and garbage perfect for the abandoned barn/farmhouse

If you look closely you can also see the dirt tracks I left behind the bottom dump truck and behind the CAT, giving a more disrupted earth appearance from the construction traffic
(Dumpster has some old carpets and a chair tossed in it)

Some before and after shots of the replaced and added industries....

I was operating a switching session and kept glancing at the background and noticed how much a difference filling in those empty spaces or adding over the original buildings really impacts the session.
Not only does the background look better but it is actually functional as well.

Dave Snow released some new trucks that I thought would fit perfectly...

Above: Utility crews restoring electricity after that storm rolled through

Above: The box truck, a common site across America and this Penske version is being loaded up with goods at the distribution center.

Thanks again to Dave for continually
releasing excellent assets !

Minor update...replaced the smoking barrels over campfire with Dinorius_Redundicus's derelict barrel with heated coals...

Derelict barrel 07 "A derelict 200 litre chemical barrel being used as an incinerator." Can be found on DLS. BTW, Dinorius_Redundicus has some of the best modeled junk you can find under his Derelict series !

Feedback wanted...as I mentioned prior I use to travel the Northeast corridor between NY and Philadelphia via Amtrak, Septa and NJ Transit....now especially in Northeast Philly you will see abandoned stations and industrial areas which is where I got the idea for an abandoned freight/passenger depot near a more modern Amtrak station. Old meets new. I wanted that over grown run down abandoned look next to the more well kept station which is actually more common than not back east. You might also notice I did not use the "enhanced" brighter pic on all these shots to convey the gloom more thoroughly. I have over grown weeds and misc items such as barrels, railroad ties, car seats etc... scattered around the depot. So tell me if you guys like it or not......
