Many years ago when steam was retiring from revnue serivce. The Lackawanna wanted Scranton to have a steam locomotive to be put on public display. The locomotive would be 4-8-4 northern or as they are known on the Lackawanna "Poconos." The locomotive was to be moved to Nay Aug Park. Though their was no way to move the locomotive their. So scranton turned it down and the locomotive was scrapped.:'(

lackawanna locomotive

It is very sad about to think about what could have been in steam restoration and preservation.

Was that the last of the Pocono 4-8-4s? Or could there possibly one more out there somewhere. I doubt it to be honest, but you never know.

Rock On!

Something simular happened down here in Dallas TX in the 50s.

The Texas & Pacific Railway was phasing out steam, included were the legendary 2-10-4 "Texas" types. There were to be two saved. One, the 610, donated to FT.Worth. The other, 638, was donated to Dallas during the state fair of '53. Sadly in its first two years on display it got so heavily vandilized that the city deamed it unsafe and had it scrapped. This lead to the NYC "Mohawk" 4-8-2 3001 being brought down to replace it. The scrapping of the 638 also lead to the creation of the "Age of Steam" Muesum, which is now in the process of relocating out of Dallas to Frisco.

So now, 610 is the LAST of the T&P's legendary 2-10-4s. They were the first ever. The first of them, 600-609, even beatting the 2-8-4s of the north to delivery & service.

Luckly, sister 610 had a much different fate. She was preserved, and even during the freedom train the state restored her to pull the freedom train when it came to Texas. The 610 now resides in Rusk, TX. Mothballed by the TSR (Texas State Railroad), which have no intentions of running her. When I tried getting pictures, I was chased away from the shed where 610 is kept by a rent a cop on a golf cart whom we nick-named "Smiley". TSR and the scrapping of 638...:n: , but at least having one of the class live? :Y:

now with all of the lacawannna 4-8-4s scrapped,I have read a book that had a photo that had the preserved 261 and looking like the original EL engine and the strange thing is,the 261 is a Milwaukee road engine, something is not right here!:(

Well Milwaukee 261 is made up of various design's of northerns. It was based on Delware and Hudson, Rock Island, and Union Pacfic northern desgins. So Lackawanna desgins could have also come into play. Plus for a short time the 261 was at steamtown and was made to look like DL&W 1661.
