Kerosene headlamps

What do I need to know about kerosene headlamps? I see that they have a panel of glass in the front and then the typical kerosene lamp inside the reflector. My brother also pointed out to me that the knobs on top of the headlamps might be vents to allow smoke to get out and air in. Is that true, that the knob on top is a vent? If not, how does air get in and smoke get out? Also, what happens to the panel of glass in the front of the headlamp. Does it get tinted from the smoke in any way? Or does it stay clear? I've seen a picture that shows the glass has turned yellow. is that what happens to the glass after a while on a kerosene headlamp?

bigboy ,

Not quite old enough to remember them in use , I have a couple however in my collectables . I am certain there were several models , mine are both triple vented on the tops with a tier type system , no knob . A side knob adjust the flame , and there doesn't appear to be any discoloration in the the lenses ( possibly someone else has cleaned them ) ?
Suggest you Google and see if you can find your exact model . Mine have a red lense , and green , with a clear also !

Kerosene lamps had holes in the bottom and the top to allow air flow.

If the wick was adjusted too long it would cause excessive smoke and would discolour the lens and reflector.

Regular cleaning was also required.
