KB speed

Lots of trainzers mention that they get 100+kb/sec or more yet i've only ever been able to get 50+ with a FCT. Is this because i'm in rural NSW and only ordinary broadband (landline) I think they call it. This is not a complaint. I'ts still much faster than without the FCT

A 'landline' is usually a 56K Modem with a max download 56,000 bits per second. A DSL or broadband is (as least mine is) up to 25,000,000 bits per second (divide by 8 for Kilobytes per second)

If you are getting 50kbps (bits not bytes per sec) thats about max on a 56K modem

Your speed will also drop if the line conditions are poor. This goes for both 56k modem as well as for broadband. If the client (you) and the server (ftp-site) have a hard time communicating, the service will fallback so there are fewer retries. This is called auto-negotiation.

The problem could be anywhere in the link. The line from your house to the pole, somewhere along the line, at the TELCO switch, and even at the ISP.

Trainz will now check your speeds and ping thingies too, Windows7 also has a ping and speed checker, although all those numbers mean nothing to me. I have Virgin Media fibre optic broadband at rocket speed. Never new the difference untill I got rid of the old BT phone wire from the year 1872. I went from almost a meg to plenty of meg and its great.
The old phone cables just can't carry the load as they were never meant to do other than sending the odd telegram and morse code. :hehe:

Thank you gents. That explains it pretty well. I don't find the speed annoying so I'll leave it at the moment.
